I just ordered a 27" scale guitar to play reasonably thing strings on a drop A tuning (I'm doing a lot of Pain and Hypocrisy covers these days, Tatgren phase maybe) Yes, it's a very good and special one that will make Feraledge happy (no, it's not a baritone horizon, calm down dude :D ), yes, there will be an NGD when I get it, likely tomorrow if Chronopost doesn't screw the delivery point delivery, and yes, I could test it myself later on, but what are you guys using in this configuration ?

a low 64/65 d addario works great for me.
But tension is very personal, so yea ull have to try a few sets.

    HGND in advance

On my 27" RAN Crusher 7 I use D'Addarios 59 for B and drop A... enought tension for me!

Well, I am using an 0.70 (beneath that 0.95 E string) for the low A on my E Octave tuned 28" Ibanez, for getting it tight enough for all playing purposes.

Try with an 0.72-0.74 gauge string for that dropped A string. It will be killer for sure! :metal:

    It's all pretty subjective, but I tune my 27" Carvin DC7X to drop A with a custom D'addario set that's 9, 11.5, 15, 25, 34, 46, 65 :yesway:

I can put together custom sets out of single strings on the D'addario site and even mix-match types of strings (the 65 is an NYXL and the rest are regular XL) all for a lot less than piecing together "regular" sets or ordering singles off of other sites.

What gauge strings would you normally use for drop A on a 25.5", OP?

Or anyone else ftm. Just curious about the difference in gauge you guys go with from standard to extended lengths.

Ultimately its subjective as to what you like the feel of. I even find that I prefer different gauges on different guitars (even if in same tuning with same scale length).
    When I had an LTD VB-300 (27" scale 6-string in Drop A) I used a D'addario 7-string 10-59 set and threw away the 10, leaving 13-59.

I'm using Elixir 10-56 in my Ibanez Rg7421XL. To be honest it sounds tight enough for me. Thicker strings sound to bassy.

Whatever you would use for drop Bb on 25.5

I use 56 on my ibby in B, when I drop the A I find it a bit flubby for my tastes but it's fine for b. I never was into the golden gate bridge cables on my guitars, which is why I'm getting a baritone.

Listen to this guy. I also had a RAN 27'' tuned to A standard with 66, 64, 62 and finally I got a 59 for the 7th string. The easiest to intonate and keep in tune so far. I was obsessed with tight strings and I'm a lot happier now with that "not as tight" gauge.

I have a heavy right hand attack so I use a .068 for the low A on my DC7X.
