Hello, am new to the forum and I must say what a wicked one it is. Have been searching for a good 7 for a while, decided on a C7, fancied trying actives have a Ibanez 6 (RG Prestige) with passives which I like but thought I'd give EMGs a go.

My question is about string gauge, I am planning to tune drop D with a low A and I prefer quite tight strings anyway, I have 10-46 on my standard tuned Ibbi and 11-52 on my drop c tuned Ibbi, so thats the sort of tension and feel I like. I am guessing 10-52 (d'addario exl140) with a 60 or thicker for the low A. What do you guys reckon? Cheers, Fionn. :shred:

I've got an Ibanez RG1527 which has a 25.5" neck. And I use 10-14-19-28-39-52 with a 65 (soon to be 68) for the B. The tension is fantastic!

It's quite important to get all your tensions right. Go to the D'Addario string tension guide. Have fun... :hbang:

Cheers for that but now I'm confused! I think I'll use the same as you the 10-52 with a big A! I'm not sure how the C7's extended neck will affect the tension, I know it'll increase but how much?

I had ~9-46 with a 60 in standard and halfstep flat on my hellraiser and loved it, but went to a 70 cause I could and loved it even more! For me the 60 was perfect in B and the 70 was a little thick for Bflat, but not by much. 66/68 would be perfect for me. If I had it still I'd be probably on 9-50/66 in bflat. Infact thats what I plan on running on my next 7.

Its not that important to get even tension between the strings since you might like light top and heavy bottom for example. I have a .9 for the high D (standard A tuning) and I really think its more comfortable that way. At the same time my lowest A string is a .68.

.9 - .68 works great for me! Try it, or a heavier string for the High E.

Btw, sometimes I tune up to standard B and thats no problem at all.

i use 52 gauge on my 6 strings for drop c and for my 7 strings for standard B i use 56s

especially with a 26" scale you can't go wrong

unless you really dig big gauges

I'm doing a 9-46 with a 60 as the low B string and it works great! Nice and tight, with tons of clarity. when I was going with a 56 or 58 for the low B, it sounded okay, but no where near as good as the 60. I'd try a 60 first, and if you think you'd like a thicker one after that then go for it!

I use the D'addario set of 10-59 for my 7. Not too light, not too chunky. And I love D'adds too, for their bright tone. Really great for cleans.
