    So I'm self-teaching myself slap bass. I've already had to change my style from a Flea style 'thumb' down to a 'thumb up' technique over a few weeks (just because the thumb down style really lacked 'feel' for me) and I really want to get to work learning some tunes. So any recommendations for some groovy, funky bass tunes I could learn? Probably along the lines of Marcus Miller, or Stanley Clarke. Probably not any Wooten, that guy is a machine. :lol:

    Also, any more funk with a jazz or fusion influence would be awesome as well as I would really just love to learn stuff like that. Thanks in advance for any recommendations that come my way, and maybe I'll incorporate some of these bass ideas for my next album!

    Otherwise, just share your favourite groovalicious slap bass licks! :yesway:

    Primus. Les Claypool writes some great slap basslines, some quite complex some pretty easy to figure out.

    I enjoy playing slap but the 80's kind of gave it a hard time... Maybe it's time to call the horn section up to the stage and resurrect it, eh?

    Here's some bassist you may enjoy;

    Larry Graham was a big influence on slap (so I'm told), getting some good exposure to the pop audience on Michael Jackson's "Off the wall" album.

    Thanks for all the posts guys! I think in general I'm wanting to learn more 'traditional' slap, basically meaning I'm nowhere near good enough on bass to be learning Wooten or Evan Brewer stuff! Old school funk is always a good shout. I'm trying to avoid Flea and Les Claypool stuff for that reason and also since I was a big Chili's fan and I would pretty much only play their stuff on bass. And I guess I should have mentioned its more my right hand I'm worried about since my left is all good from playing guitar for nearly 10 years.

    Keep posting cool stuff guys! And if you have videos of yourself slapping away, feel free to post them. I think this should just be a thread for the appreciation of slap bass in general! :hbang:
