I grew up in Indiana. Indiana was never a confederate state. Indiana isn't even very far south--in fact you don't even start getting hick accents until about halfway down the state. Yet I saw the confederate flag all over the place. I couldn't really tell you how it's flown in the actual south, but in Indiana the only reason this flag has ever been flown is as a symbol of racism and white pride. There's practically no other excuses you could give!
