So i posted a WTB ad on toronto.craigslist.org last week, looking for a Mesa/Boogie Thiele 1x12 cab, just on the outside chance that somebody local might have one for sale. A couple of days later i got a hit! A local guy was selling his for CAD$350, with the EVM-12L speaker. Not a bad price at all considering these retail for close to CAD$500 now with the Celestion C90.

I went and checked it out last night and it was in decent shape. A few nicks in the Tolex, but otherwise very clean, and man... this thing pushes a LOT of air for a 1x12. I plugged in his Mark III head and hit a few big chord on my JP7 and was sold.

I'm not sure if he was the original owner or not. It looks like at some point, it was being used in a stereo setup (judging by the 1/L stickers on the jackplate). The jackplate is also inverted (not a bad idea, considering most of the time you're plugging it in leaning over it from above) but the Mesa/Boogie badge and rubber feet are missing, so i'll be calling Mesa this afternoon to see if i can get replacements. I'll also have to spend some time cleaning the beer stains off it. :/

So it looks like i've got a pretty killer "mini me" version of my Classic 50/50 + G-Flex rig with this and the PowerBlock. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a permanent downsizing... i'll know for sure after i test it out in the rehearsal space on the weekend.

So take this is an advance heads-up that my rack and my G-Flex may be coming up for sale in the next couple of weeks. My first preference will be to sell the rack and the cab locally to someone here.

nice! so, what is it that makes that cabinet special compared to other 1x12 cabs? i guess i'm not sure what makes it "thiele".

It's a closed-back, ported 1x12. The reason the speaker is off-centre is that the right side is one giant "duct" that channels the air from behind the speaker out the front for pant-flapping goodness. Think of it as a Genz Benz G-Flex cut in half and tipped on its side. It sounds HUGE.

    A. Neville Thiele is an acoustical engineer who developed algorithms for measuring the efficiency of speakers and cabinets. I'm assuming that Mesa/Boogie designed these cabinets around his specifications.

I was seriously considering building my own cab based on plans i found at the Electro-Voice site, but getting a new EVM-12L was going to cost upwards of C$230, and adding on a quality piece of plywood, some tools, hardware, covering the cab, etc., it started looking less and less economical to build one when they were popping up on the second-hand market for not much more.

    Nice score! :yesway:

I would love to try a cabinet with those EV EVM-12L speakers.

Those cabs are called "thiele" because they used the Thiele/Small parameters to build the ported box, that's why it sounds so fucking awesome. It really helps having a box which actually had thought put into the design

Yep. Building a good-sounding cab is more than just nailing a box together. I'm blown away by how HUGE this little thing sounds. And it fits in the back of my smart car. :)

Looks ace. I'm fed up of crappy cab makers plonking some drivers in a box without designing it properly. I really wanted a G-Flex last time I got a cab but they're so expensive to get to the UK- ported guitar cabs is good!

Nice score, Darren. Those Thiele cabs are the best 1x12s ever made, IMO. You're right, they push mad air, and so so deep, clear, and gigantosaurus.

    :hbang: Plus portable!

Hmm, I think I might have to check out some of those speaker designs.

    They're about £500 for a 2x12 or £800 for a 4x12, so comparable prices to Mesa.
