In December Skip Fantry (of Kalium and Knucklehead fame) posted 5 Quake basses in the middle of production. I bought one one them, because I've been wanting to tune to C#0 for a loooong time. So I bought this:

With the intent to color it like this:

And Skip recently told me he'll be using these:

And he's installing noiseless single coils as an upgrade to get a better tone out of it. (Future Quakes are all going to be humbucking).

Anyway, I can't wait to get it! It's not clear when it will be done, but I believe he's working on the staining as we speak....

No, it's alder. The only swamp ash in this batch is going to Chris Cardone. In Cardone green, naturally. The jazz pup models were alder, and the humbucking models were mahogany. I wanted the single coils because I want the brightness and bite since I'm tuning so low. And alder is a lighter colored wood, which should help the pink come through.

I also had him round out some of the body edges, because I know some of the NAMM guys were saying there were sharp angles on the edges of the demo bass, and that it got some dings and stuff from it. I tend to be a bit klutzy, so that should help. Most guitars don't travel much for than from stand to chair, and I STILL manage to put dents in them!

C#0... very nice. That thing's gonna sound like helicopter blades chopping through the air. Do you know the scale length and the diameter string it'll use?

Can't wait to see this. What are the scale lengths and string gauges you plan to use? I'm GAS'ing for a fanned fret bass tuned to A0.

Yeah, I'm not sure of the string gauge for the C#0, but since it's made by the Kalium Crew, I'm sure they've got it dialed in pretty well for that.

It's essentially 37-40". The actual length on the low end, I believe, is 39.55".

So good to see this happening.
The impression i got is that the fanned Quakes are exactly 37" to 40" and the parallel Quakes are the original 39.55" length (= 35" plus 2 frets, the original concept, to get A0 with the gauge and clarity of a B0).

Love the color, I hope it turns darker when clear coated. Not so much a fan of the Quake design though, that body is just too elongated and slim for my tastes.

OK, update for you guys! The bass is stained, and Skip got Nordstrand to build some really cool noiseless single coils to his spec. He originally tried regular single coils, but they were too noisey. Anyway, it's suuuuper close! I'll do a video of the C#0 so you guys can all hear nothing coming out of your phone and laptop speakers. But honestly, I have no idea how to even record it, much less how you'll hear it. I DO have a MAS-112 (Mike Arnopol Soundworks) that will reproduce it as well as anything out there, so I'll be able to hear it. (I picked it up when I got my NS2 tuned to F#, and after having researched Barefaced, Greenboy, etc.) I just don't know how you guys will.

But, it's a jazz bass, so maybe I'll play some Jaco a couple octaves lower than normal.

Haha, yeah, the HS is definitely a point of contention with people. I personally don't really mind it. At least it's compact, which this thing needs at 40". But yeah, the pink/purple is hot! For a while I was on the fence about maybe just getting the black stained NAMM build, but Chris Cardone talked me into sticking with my original plan, and I'm glad I did!
