I'm currently looking into streamlining my live setup for a new noisy grindcore influenced project. It'll be 1 guitarist, 1 singer, 1 laptop drum machine.
I wanna travel as light as possible so I'm thinking about completely ditching my amp and cab and going direct to the PA from my effects chain.
I'm not interested in "authentic" sounding guitar tones, I just want it harsh with plenty of bottom end action... (just like what yo mama told me last night...)
I've been looking at either multi fx with cab sim for DI (eg. a line 6 HD500/Helix), or pedal board with a preamp (eg. Randall RG13) and a cab sim DI box (H&K Red Box). Would I even need a preamp or just a distortion pedal and cab sim?
Does anybody else do anything like this? Or am I completely insane?

If you want noisy, you want an amp.

if "noisy" includes feedback, still consider a small powered on monitor on stage for some volume to work against

I use my HD500X exclusively now, and just get it fed back as needed either in the in-ears or in the wedge, depending on where I'm playing.
Gives me plenty of what I need.

If you know you will always be playing venues with powerful PA systems that include subs then you may be able to get away with no amp. The bands I know of that do similar things bring their own PA to make sure they have what they need.
