Yea, I'm not above stealing puns from defunct refinishing companies when appropriate ;-)

Behold! Or shield your eyes! Probably depends on whether you were born after 1993 or so :) It's an Ibanez UV77RE -- the first multi-color reissues they did in 2010 as a 20th anniversary model. They're actually built by Sugi, a Japanese shop that does really good work, and ghostbuilds some of the other Ibanez limited models (think they did the Thordendahl 8s, and the newer Ron Thorn swirl passion-warfare reissues). Weirdly enough, like the LACS, also celebrity-owned (this time, by Alessandro Cortini's, keyboard/synth guy from NIN).

Really was trying to save some money but it was so 80s that I had to go for it. While I don't think too much about instruments than are "inspiring" etc., it's cool to have an instrument that some how triggers a sense of nostalgia. Plus I'm watching stranger things season 2, playing around with a new synth, it just all seems to kind of fit.

I have less to say about this one as a review I guess because I haven't played any other original universes, or any of the nicer reissues, so I don't really have many points of comparison. I can just say it's great, typical high-end Ibanez -- nice ball frets are back, and really nice clear (both in contrast to the LACS). I haven't heard great things about them -- most go into collector hands so you never hear any review, and one guy on here who had a few universes hinted that his was kind of a dog. Happy to report I don't find it to be the case, and it seems well suited to the types of songs you associate with original universes. Like it's not amazing, but it's a sound we all know and it's executed here really well. The pickups (Blazes?) are on the darker side, like a slightly less warm Tone Zone sort of bridge, but a bit tighter, not by a huge amount.

But one thing that was nice about buying this was that when I saw it on Reverb and noticed it was in the same city that Alain from this forum (or banned from this forum) is in, I hit him up to see if I could get in touch with the guy and buy off-Reverb. And connected to the guy, who is also a huge synth fanatic, and the deal barely happened, but it did happen :) Nice to see people in this community help each other out, etc!

I thought it would be really cool to take photos of such a vivid guitar on my computer desk, not sure it really worked out as well as I had hoped (didn't really bokeh the background enough to stop it from being distracting) but just another experiment in slowly learning how to take better/different gear photos:

And a sort of attempt at some marketing-ish type photo for a friend who lent me his precision drive:

Always a dream guitar of mine. Such a sexy instrument.

Have you played Erotic Nightmares on it yet?

Steve Vai's done tremendous things, like pushing the guitar industry to put out cool instruments and features. But inspiring me to play any of his music has never been one of them ;-)

Such a cool swirl. I always wanted one until a got a Silver Dot Universe and realized the necks are just way too small for me - glad I made the mistake with something considerably more affordable. That kinda killed me wanting one, but I sure like seeing them still.

    I'm less snooty IRL too!

I definitely had a Michelangelo with a surfboard toy that would pretty much match up entirely :D

I'd get a Daemoness or Mayones or Caparison then -- they have necks that are a bit wider, if that's what you mean. Vik and Ibanez are about the same. I don't find it so "thin" but a j-custom 6 is like my usual thing.

Best NGD we've had in months.
Something magic about the universes man; all of them. The PBKs are my personal favorite but damn if all the swirls don't look insane.

Nah, Mehtab's had a bunch of universes but I don't think ever one of these. He had a DNA Jem -- you might be thinking of that.

Yea, it's very subjective but this one is a top 5 for me. I like the ones with a lot of black, which is why the run for Ron didn't do much for me. If I could shave off a little of the yellow here it'd be perfect :)
