I've had my M-Audio BX5 monitors for several years now and I think it's time for an upgrade. I know they are very low end monitors, so I'm looking for something more expensive and that will be better quality. My max budget is $900CAD for both and would prefer to buy new. Should I go for active or passive monitors? And does the size matter? Should I go with 5", 6", etc.?

I don't know much about new studio monitors so any suggestions would be a great help. I will be using these studio monitors for mixing obviously. My room is treated and I have a set of monitor isolation pads. I will be purchasing monitor stands as well.

If you could provide me with some suggestions and info, I would really appreciate it. I'd prefer to buy from Long & McQuade. Here is a link to all the monitors they have:

Given your budget, experience, and where you want to buy, I would go with the Yamaha HS5's and a Yamaha 10 in sub and just call it good. Buy the sub though; it changed the low-end game for me big time.

If you budget was twice the amount I'd say go with Adam A7X or something from Focal. But those Yamaha's with a sub will be PLENTY. I made the regret of going with KRK8's and they are way too big for my mixing space and the proximity at which I sit, but I make them work. My next set will be A7X.

At the moment, I'm considering these:

Which of these would you recommend? What are the advantages of one over the other? Or are there any others I should consider? Looking at purchasing them from Long & McQuade:

Also, I'm in a relatively small room in my basement. It's more of a square size and I have some acoustic panels on the wall and at the corners. What monitor size would be the best? From what I understand, I shouldn't get something too big? Maybe 5", 6"?
