    Hi guys,

I recently brought a new 8 string and I enjoy it but no matter what effects I put on it its sounding off (really muddy on the low end).
Its my first 8 string after moving up from a 6 its a schecter diamond series blackjack 8 and I have had trouble finding other modles that are that are the same online to compare. The pickups are nazgul sentinels so im not worried about them.
Im just wordering if you guys have any tricks for a cleaner tone with low end chords?

Might just be old strings. Those are 28" IIRC, so you should be able to get a decently bright tone with good strings.

Which gauges and tuning are you using?

really have to try those Nazgul Sentinels... :coffee:

anyway, lower you gain, change strings and work you technique... should do the trick.

Auto correct probably doesn't know any better :fever:

Mind you I don't play an 8 string currently, but I've tuned one of my 7 strings down to F# quite a bit. I've found lowering the gain just a bit, and rolling the bass knob back on the amp a touch really cleans it up. I've also found boosting the high mids helps quite a bit too.

    That's an interesting tuning.

The easiest solution is the first to try, so I guess, play with your amp settings, then, if that doesn't work, get some fresh strings on there.

I've been learning Plini on it so I decided to tune my low end to fit the rest.

Don't have any pedals atm just using the built in amp effects.

I second above comment about OD pedal. Get a good OD pedal for the front of your amp. Fortin 33 is pretty ridiculous but there are a lot of others that are good as well. What kind of rig are you playing through?

Try lowering your bridge pickup. Slightly less output but cleans and defines the lows. Especially helps clean up quick muted staccato playing.

Cut some bass on the amp, lower the gain a bit, adjust the pickup height. Yup, try all of that. Another thing is try and get the right tension for your tuning. If you're tuning down to a G on a 28" scale you'll need some thicker strings to give you usable tension. If you're tuning up then disregard. Ideally you want at least 15lbs of tension on your strings. La bella makes great strings and imo they're clearer than kalium's thicker strings.
