I've had an RG8A for sale on Craigslist for a couple years with very little interest, I just never really bonded with an 8 string and the pickups were awful. I thought about changing them but I didn't want to go to all the trouble removing the active circuit etc.

A few weeks ago I get an offer for a 5150 head, even trade. I'm pretty well set on amps but I thought why not, if I don't like it I'll probably have a lot better time selling the amp than this guitar. Finally got to give it a good try at volume today, WOW this thing is a gain monster. A bit different sounding than I'm used to, my main high gain amps are a Mesa .50 Caliber and a Carvin Legacy 3, but I have to say I'm impressed.

Bad cell phone pic but here it is on my 4x12"

Good trade. 5150's are a staple for a reason.

Nice trade! There is a very good market for older peavey amps, for sure.

Yea I agree, I came out well, wonder if the other guy feels the same....

I have more amps than I need right now so I'm probably going to sell a few and maybe replace it with one nicer one, not sure if I will keep the 5150 or not but I do like it when I'm in the mood to play something heavy. Speaking of heavy the thing is a beast to carry around for a head.

Yep, I had a few of those for several years. I always miss it. Those things sound amazing.

The 6505 was my first tube amp and I don't think I'll ever part with it.

Got mine modded by FJA and it slays. Which also means I couldn't get a proper value for it on resale.

Yes, it is an insanely heavy head. Heavy = tone though.

Before you consider getting rid of it though, you owe it to yourself to try a 5751 tube in V1 (NOS preferably, but JJ 5751s are nice and cheap), and an EQ pedal in the loop.

The 5150 EQ section doesn't have all that much range in adjustment. A quality EQ pedal in the loop helps increase the "monster" factor in these amps. Namely, you can cut the fizz at the high end and tame some of the middle mids (which I think it has too much of). The end result is pretty amazing. I have played a lot of high gain amps and IMO none of them are more brutal than my 6505 with the additions I mentioned.

If you don't have one... invest in a green Maxon OD808 pedal (gain down/level up)... and enjoy.

    Congrats, and enjoy!!!!

I've been through many a "boutique" amp and have yet to play a 5150. I plan on grabbing either a 6505+ or 5150 at some point here. I just took the long way around I guess....hahahahaha!

I move gear constantly, but there is never a time when I don't have a 5150 Variant in my lineup.

Congrats on the amp, you' got yourself one of the best in the heavy music biz.
