You know what im talking about. An ampeg vh140 or 5150 or powerball etc etc in rack form. MEAN, AGGRESSIVE,
    HI GAIN preamps of death!
Ive got the Crate XLP which is essentially the gx130 (ampeg vh140 clone) which i absolutely love! Have my sites on a crate TDP as well. What others should i keep my eyes open forr?

I'd go ENGL or Mesa. Alternately, this is a crazy thought but a GSP1101 or L6 HD Pro?

I had a ADA MP-1, and it wasn't brutal sounding. Probably needed a boost. I've got a GSP 1101, and that'll do brootz all day. Running it into a power amp into a 4 x 12, sounds sick.

If you can find a modded one (such as the 3TM mod), they can have tons of gain on tap.

+1 on the GSP1101, I have owned mine for several years now and it can do some really sick Death Metal tones.

Mine was modded. Not sure which mod though. It sounded like a JCM 800. Which for some things was good, but it definitely needed a boost for heavier stuff, and I didn't want to deal with that. Sold it.

Did it have the 3TM? I've heard clips with that mod and it has tons of gain on tap. Sounds almost like a Mesa Mark series or a really hot-rodded Marshall.

Ps - call me crazy but i dont like digital, i like simplistic all knob control. Plus i once owned a dual rec and hated it.

As someone who owns one of the Mesa Studio preamps and absolutely loves it to death, I probably wouldn't recommend it for brutal death. It's got plenty of gain and it's super versatile so you could probably get it to where you want, but it's gain is super tight and smooth in general. However I run an HM-2 or BAT Black Forest into mine and it can definitely get there with an aggressive pedal as a boost.

I find my Peavey Rockmaster to be suited to all types of metal between the two distortion channels, the push/pull on the pre gain knobs, and possibly a boost. I find an EQ(Boss GE-7 w/Sniper mod) in the effects loop to give a major improvement to my tone as well. I've tried running it in front but was never happy with it, however in the loop with even subtle settings friends of mine have been amazed at the difference between having it on or off. Also I wasn't 100% happy with the tone when I first got it but after changing coupling cap C14 from a .001uF to a .0022uF all my gripes were gone. I've considered trying some other mods but am so happy with it now I figure I'll just leave it be for the time being.

As a peavey fanatic i know one day i will definitely get a rockmaster. Just a matter of right place right time. Id also love an engl but will probably never afford it. Id LOVE an amt ss-10 too. One day. Im definitely into kind of vintage gear. SS is great too and is often cheap. Anyone have experience with othe crate pres besides the xlp? I was looking into the TDP which seems pretty cool. Just sick of seeing yutube vids of people playing their teles and strats and refusing to nudge their gain past 9 oclock when doing gear reviews etc lol

I love my GSP1101. I know it's digital, but through a Mesa 2:50, it can do anything high gain in a spectacular fashion.

I have put it up against a E530, SS10, Theta, and Rectifer Recording pre, and it slays them all, except for the Theta, which I would say they are equal. Good luck finding a Theta pre, and make sure you get the FTSW with it or it's practically useless.
