I'm looking to buy my first 7 string guitar. I have a budget of around $1000AUD, and play predominantly metal, but also jazz.

I'm looking for a guitar that has the large, 'fat' sound of Korn, mixed with a bit of that hard edged 'djenty' sound of Meshuggah. I'm open to any brand.

I'm not new to guitar (been playing for 11 years), just new to seven strings, so you don't have to talk in simple terms. I'm after some decent advice here, as I haven't been about to find solid info on other sites.

Can I please request a couple of things be refrained from being posted on this thread, as I've seen it elsewhere and it doesn't help:

    • "Just get a black guitar and you're good to go"
    • "If you've got a good amp and effects the guitar won't matter too much" (I've heard sub-standard 7 strings make great amps sound like shit)
    • Please avoid going off topic or abusing each others opinions

    Thank heaps for any help.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm after more specifics, like model numbers.

I've been searching the Ibanez catalog so far, but there are just so many choices.

Ibanez RGD7320Z, it has has a longer scale for lower tunings you may use, the pickups are decent, you can't go wrong with it really and it has great upper fret access. :yesway:

    Maybe the Ibanez S7420?

I kind of think of Korn and Meshuggah as opposite tones and the S series is sort of in the middle of the road tonally.

I'd suggest the Ibanez 1527M if you're opposed to black guitars:

    Or the new RG827qmz:

    ET Guitars Tomahawk?
    ET Guitars
Australian made guitar for under $1k.

Edit: Like Ibanez, but higher quality for less price.

Here's an Ibanez 7621 on Ebay...but I think it may really be a 7620 and the seller even says that it has a tremolo. The seller does not give any details about the condition of this guitar so beware.

Ibanez RG 7620 and upgrade the pickups. You'll have an awesome guitar for around 700 bucks!

    I'll second this motion!!! :metal:
They could also make it a baritone if you want to tune really low...

ET guitars are a good choice, but it may take a few months.

LTD MH417 or Ibanez RG7321 are fair choices for the price range. Schecter Loomis runs about $1200 new if you can get a deal and is a popular option.

The prestige and premium Ibbys describe above are great, but will run to 1500-1800 if you buy locally.

Depending on your appetite for risk, buying second hand or importing new/second hand will vastly increase your options. Depends on what sort of specs you want.

Thanks to everyone for all the great input. You've renewed my faith in these forums.

After much thought, I'm gonna go with the Ibanez RG1527M (galaxy white) and put an EMG81-7 in the bridge, with an EMG60-7 in the neck.

Bit out of my initial price idea, but I'll just save for a bit longer. Reckon it's gonna be awesome.

Thanks again. You guys have been a great help. I'll post pics on here when I get it all done and put up comments.

And to update this thread many months later: I actually ended up getting a Schecter ATX Blackjack C-7 in Walnut Satin. Farking awesome guitar. Very solid, has great tone, and HEAPS of sustain. I was actually really surprised. When I first tried letting a (distorted) chord ring out, I thought it was never gonna stop.

*Oh yeah, makes all those amp sims actually usable now. :)

For fat sound get a Schecter C-7 definitely. All mahogany, set-thru neck guitars that are a big cumbersome if you're used to ibanez but they're built well, sound huge, and play beautifully imo... Otherwise get an Ibanez and put some BKP warpigs in that bitch.
