    Pros and cons of each?
Other similar and compact midi capable choices?

Would just be for mod type fx in fx loop so i totally dont need amp/cab sims.

Would prefer whichever unit i get to be simple to use and intuitive.

Head to l&m and try them both. Why not an eventide modfactor?

I would add an M9 to that list if you need mod and verb/delay. They're super cheap used now that the HX series has been taking off, and the ability to run multiple effects at once is always good. I mostly just use mine in front of my Timeline and Big Sky for a noise gate, eq, and volume cut/boost for solos and cleans, but it's capable of a lot more than my uses

H9 does multiple fx simultaneously! ? That might just be the deal ... Maker! For me.
How does it gate compare to the gstring?

If you're looking at an h9 base, might as well look at the hxfx

    He said M9. Not H9. :)

The M9 is the M5’s bigger brother. They’re good units for sure and are significantly simpler and more intuitive than some of the more advanced modelers like the Helix or the Fractal stuff. With that said, there no way I’d choose the M-series over those others. Does HX Stomp do MIDI? Might be worth a look.

What modulation effects do you need? Take a look at the Keeley Dark Side.

I believe i read that the hx stomp is only one effect at a time so considering that and the fact it cost twice as much makes it not so appealing.

Line6 M5 - only one effect per preset, effect are average quality, but reverbs and delays are good.
Nova System - not pedalboard friendly, effect are classic TC quality like G-major, I like some chorus, reverb and delay sounds.
I settled at Boss MS-3, it replaced my whole pedalboard besides boost pedals. Best piece of gear at value/space/performance in years.

I dont have one, but I thought the HX Stomp had 6 blocks available, so you should be able to run 6 effects at a time?.....

Line6 M5 you can only use one effect at once.
Line6 M9 can use multiple effects at once (3 I think).
Line6 HX Effects can use multiple effects at once (6 I think).

    I'm using a Boss MS-3.

I have traditionally hated Boss Multi-Fx.

Take from that what you will.
