Thoughts? Even being a huge fan of Emperor and most of the solo career, at first listen I think this is his weakest album.

I actually think it's one of his best solo albums.

One of the biggest problems I have with him as a solo artist is that he tends to go on too many tangents within the album. However, I think he does a very good job of balancing all of the stuff he wants to explore here.

Obviously, he's really into trying to write big pop-rock choruses and catchy melodies right now, and he's really into analog synths, but he does a good job of balancing that stuff with the heavy riffs and vocals so it flows very well and sounds natural.

His clean vocals sound a lot stronger here too, you can tell he's been working on them.

At the end of the day, you really have to appreciate how unafraid he is of trying new things, I really think he nailed a lot of stuff he tried to do on this album.

I totally dig it as well. I love listening to his solo work. He has a great musical vision.
I'm a sucker for analog synth as well.

I think it's one of his best albums as well. I absolutely love Twin Black Angels, that was quite a surprise.

Not my cup of tea, honestly. Basically, everything after AngL is not my cup of tea :) The Adversary is still his best solo album.

I was a big fan of Emperor but I haven't listened to any of his solo records so this will be a good start.

Is it me or does Arcana Imperii sound A LOT like Disassembled and South winds combined? Not a straight rip-off of either song but almost like a remix.

probably not the best start if you're an emperor fan :) try the earlier ones like The Adversary.

I love Ihsahn and think he’s absolutely genius but I just don’t jive with the entire album. Maybe I just need some time with it.

He played 3 songs at his gig the other night. Sounded fairly good. I am waiting for the CD to arrive before I listen to it, and will hold judgement until I have listened to it a few times.
He and his band are an absolute beast live.

So far, I like it. "Arcana Imperii" and "Wake" are actually my least favourite songs on it :D At some points, the synths are annoying as hell. And absolutly great. For some reason, it totally works for me. Riffs, melodies, this exceeds my expectations.

I haven’t really followed him since one of the last Emperor albums, but I skimmed through this and dig it.

Hm. Well he's stretching out. I like the one less enemy concept. There's some really cool riffs in here. I feel like this might have needed a producer to come in and kinda help structure the songs.

At around 38:17 I'm kinda puzzled. It sounds so poppy.

I probably would have trimmed about 10 or more minutes off this. There are great riffs everywhere, but like for example what's with that intro to the album?

Hey man it's an album with good sound engineering and spot on playing. That's a win.

    Trucked by this one.
I think he finally focused and created a melodic beast.
    Overall a mature release.

Received it Saturday and listened to it about 4 times. Don't know if it is because I'm hyped about and addicted to the Alkaloid release but this album doesn't click with me. I normally love everything Ihsahn does so I should keep trying. It's a mature album, but also....well.....BLAND. I don't know why.

I do mostly enjoy the older Ihsahn stuff, but the fact that this guy is still recording all instruments besides drums and killing it live guitar AND vocals is impressive. I'm looking at you Jari(wintersun)...
