Good. Not cause Hulk Hogan is a cool dude or anything, but cause Gawker is such a disgusting site and their conduct through this whole thing has been downright Salacious Crumb-ish. I don't think they ever expected to lose and were being incredibly annoying dicks about it non-stop.

After they outed the CFO of Conde Nast last year and seemed to show no regret about it, yeah, glad as hell they lost. .... the site for trying to ruin people's lives and privacy in the name of "journalistic integrity."

Also, ANOTHER thing worth noting is the punitive damages on top of the awarded sum. And if Gawker wants to appeal, they still need to pay $50m.

So, yeah, Gawker ....ed themselves over. Big ....in' tim.

Gawker reaped what they sowed. Maybe next time they won't be smug ....s and defy direct court orders, assuming they have enough money left to still run after this.

Good. Screw Gawker (and Nick Denton in particular).

How this was such a huge case and how someone could ever think they were justified in leaking a sex tape it beyond me.

Years back, when I lived in NYC, the ceiling of our apartment collapsed due to bad plumbing work, our landlord was a dick about it, and my roommate and I had to break our lease. We found a lawyer to make sure it was all done properly and we didn't get screwed. In his office, there was a picture of him with Hulk Hogan. Turned out, he represented Hulk in his various property dealings. Figured we couldn't go wrong with the Hulkster's lawyer. He did a good job for us, so I'd say the Hulk knows how to pick good legal representation.

So he pretty much won back all the money his ex-wife took and ran off with a 22 year old with.
So, when does he buy TNA?

He most likely won't get it. Doubt Gawker (or the 2 dudes liable) have that kind of money, so they're most likely going to declare bankruptcy.

My biggest weakness when I'm trying to contribute to conversations has always been economics. I can think my way through the legal and social ramifications of most events, but finance just seems arbitrary to me (I know it isn't, I just don't get it).

I came to this thread wondering (as I do with all cases of this nature) how the hell someone could claim to have been personally hurt to the tune of $100 million.

In hindsight, it seems the question isn't "How much money will it take to repair the damage Gawker did to me?" as much as it's "How much money will we need to take to put Gawker out of business?". As immature and vindictive as it sounds, it seems to be the kind of mentality Gawker had when it came to choosing whether or not to run a story. Their idea of 'newsworthiness' (a very important concept within journalism and the press) seems to be entirely based around how much spectacle they can generate, which can be extremely damaging. They contribute little good to the world of journalism at a point in time where worthwhile publications and journalists are struggling to stay afloat, and lowering themselves to Gawker's level to survive.

Despite all of this, my opinion in this case was relatively neutral until I saw this video, posted on Reddit earlier today, of the trial. In it, a representative of Gawker is being asked about why he was making sarcastic jokes about child pornography in the middle of his deposition, and is essentially pushed into a corner on how he treats first amendment rights.

Gawker and its equivalent 'media' outlets have lasted a surprisingly long time without having to face consequences for their negative practices. I genuinely hope this shuts Gawker down, and acts as a message to businesses that rely on Yellow Journalism to make their money.

According to this, Gawker was valued at $250 million a year ago, with a net 2014 revenue of $45 million. If someone who actually understands economics could translate that for me, that'd be nice. I assume it means "The business could sell for $250 million, but only has its hands on $45 million right now". $115 million seems like it's just enough to wipe them out, and send a decent portion Hogan's way.

That said, Gawker is appealing the decision, and I believe this has been going on since 2012. By the time the legal process is complete, Gawker may have raised enough revenue to pay Hogan.

In order to appeal the decision in Florida, they have to post 50 million to begin with, so they're already out a pretty decent chunk of coin.

What that means is that in 2014, Gawker had a gross income of $45,000,000. So that's just how much money flowed into the organization, and it doesn't take into account their expenses, taxes, etc...

However, the company's value is much greater than that because it has assets in addition to the money it's got in the bank. This can mean investments in other businesses, real estate, web servers, intellectual property, bonds, etc... So when all of the assets (including money in the bank) are valued and added up, it's estimated to be about $250 million. Keep in mind that these valuations can be subjective. Like, how much is the name "Gawker" worth? It adds value to anything they put out because it's got market recognition, but how much real value does it add to their business? $2M? $5M?

So somebody thought that the whole company was worth about $250,000,000. $100,000,000 penalty is definitely big enough to be a serious threat to their existence.

Add an extra $25.1m to the total from punitive damages. Gawker Media needs to pay $15m, Nick Denton needs to pay $10m, and AJ Daulerio needs to pay $100k. On top of that, the jury ordered the tape sealed.
