    I prefer 6s and 7s.
After fixing my 8 and I realized after 1 year playing it that I dont really need the 8 strings.
Just used the 8 to chug or djent around but all the action was on the higher 7 strings.
Even when dropping to drop E to use the 8 it doesnt "feel" right and I quickly switched back to Drop A+low E. Tuning to Drop G# like I want to wasnt a choice because I dont want that low D#.
On 6 I love Drop C tuning, for riffey melodic riffs and clarity.

    What do you prefer?

PS: Can a Mod change the title to "How many Strings do you prefer on your main guitar?"

7 strings because of the above. Also, because with 6 stringers I feel I miss something and I play rarely with 8 stringers. Also, most of my guitars are 7s...

7's. I played 8's for a long time, but have found that 7's accomplish what I want comfortably while sounding great.

I have played and preferred 7-strings for the longest time, with 8-strings coming in second (F# tuned and High A tuned). Currently I am back to using 7-strings only, but won't rule out any 8-strings again in my future.

I like range in my instruments so I prefer my 8 strings; however, I lately I've been playing my 6 string tuned in fifths (one semi-tone more range than a standard tuned 8).

I rotate frequently between my 6 strings and 8 strings since they're all in different tunings. It keeps things interesting for me.

6 strings because all the music I enjoy, play and write has been made on 6’s. With the exception of Trivium, Batushka and Morbid Angel.

7, it took me 4 years into the seven string kingdom to manage and madly love'em, but now I don't play my sixers anymore :(

At the moment I still prefer six strings, just because I've been playing those since 25 years and 99% of the songs I play just need those...

Same here about the 25 years and the 99% of songs but get into a band where everybody exclusively use 7 strings or more, start composing a few songs for 7 strings and everything will change. You'll gradually stop picking up your sixers until you won't want to grab those. Especially when your 6stringers are mid-range and your 7s are high-end guitars. ;)

8 string simply because it's my best playing/feeling guitar and I tune it to my most used tunings (Drop A/E, Drop Ab/Eb)

This could easily change if I got an equally/better playing 6 (Drop C) or 7 (Drop A)

At the moment all I have is an 8-string, so that. But I've become so entwined with that guitar that it feels weird to play anything else. I can dig sevens, but sixes feel so limiting these days.

I will soon be getting a 7-string, also an Ibanez Prestige. That'll be more lead-oriented. Am also looking at a 9- and 10-string in the future. But overall, nothing can beat my 8-string.

7 string because the strings spacing and the low B is here if needed

I use the M80M for our doom/stoner project, and the Universe/K7/1527 for the rock/metal stuff.
    So, I’m conflicted.

When it comes to gigging, I stick to 6, but for everything else, I use my 8 string. I particularly love the range due to the tuning I use. I might start using it for my live stuff though. Jazz with 8 string might be interesting :agreed:

My main gigging guitar was a Washburn MG24B 6 string, then an Ibanez RG7620VK 7 string, then a BC Rich MB7TR 7 string, then a Parker Fly 6 string, then an Oni CF8 8 string, and now, I do all sorts of fill-in work with:

    Oni CF8 8 string guitar
    Ibanez AJ307CE 7 string guitar
    Dingwall NG-2 5 string bass
Dean Edge 6F 6 string bass
    Epiphone A 8 string mandolin

Or play my own stuff on the Oni 8 string and my customized Agile Septor 7 string 19-EDO, when I play out. I've given up other instruments for too long to really be effective using them, but, before I was married, I did a lot of gigs on 10 string steel guitar (single [E9] neck), diatonic harmonica, 5 string banjo, various drums and percussion instruments, and even concert flute (soprano flute).

On a six string, I always find myself feeling limited. On 7, I usually feel most comfortable, in general. I've tried lots of eight string guitars other than my Oni, and I never really got along with them. I think that, as others said, I spent my most formative years playing sevens, so I think of guitar in terms of seven strings.

It was always sixes for me, but the last few years it's been predominantly sevens.
