Okay, so this is my problem. I am a bassist, and I am a bassist because I like being a bassist, and have no desire to become a "guitarist." That being said with every new bass I buy, I get a new, higher string, with smaller and smaller string spacing. I most recently was in the market for was a custom 7 string, with 14mm string spacing, and a 30" scale (tuned EADGCFA). At this point I realized "I'm looking for a really big guitar." Does that sound right? I mean what is it that I'm looking for? I play chords, I use high string to play melody, while using bass strings to keep time. Do I belong on this side of things, and so can anyone suggest sometime that could fit that bill? (I was willing to pay $3000 for that bass so price isn't a huge deal, but I keep it in mind.)

This pretty much fits the bill to the "T": Ibanez.com | Basses | SR7VII Limited Edition.

They're a little hard to come by, but if you contact a dealer, or even HUSA, they'll probably be able to track one down for you.

The timber and tonality of bass and guitar are very different, even when playing the same notes at the same octave. Not to mention the differences in technique often applied.

I kind of agree with you that is exactly what I'm looking for, but I only prices I could find were in $4000 price range. I could have I custom built for that kind of money.

The list price on these was ~$2100, and they sold for ~$1500 in stores.

Are you referring to this?: http://www.scmusic.com.au/index.php...turer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=10080

That's the price it was in Australia, where things are always three or four times as expensive.

Fair enough, thanks for the tip. In the event that I can't find one, or that it is some absurd price can you recommend a luthier that might be able work with me. I've tried a lot of bass specific luthiers, and they don't want to anything to do with it.

Which specific luthiers have declined? Did they give a reason?

I've talked to three or four bass specific luthiers that where in my price range, and emailed some others, but everyone says the same thing "I can't build string spacing that narrow." I'm also having a really hard time find someone who builds a 30" scale.

Also could you point me in the right direction to find a Ibanez SR7VII? Any help would be appreciated.
