Three bars next to one's screen name (visible in threads et cetera).

When they fill up, you're banned (obviously).

    ...and they should be pink.

I'm curious, as I've never really thought about needing to immediately identify someone who has been banned: What advantage would investing time/money into developing such a feature give?

I think it'd be good in letting me know right off the bat who's a dumbass and shouldn't be listened too. There's context clues like post count, rep, and just overall presence on the board, but hey, I've never been one to turn down extra help.

I'd have two pink squares though; one more and I'm gone! :ugh:

I imagine either Stealth or CrushingAnvil hold the record for most bans.

There is an infraction system, but it just starts so much more shit than it quells.

Though, the only folks who should be worrying about bans are us. ;)

I thought someones username gets grayed out, their avatar isn't shown, and it says banned below the username when they're banned. Isn't that enough?

I think he's referring to having a system of "strikes" that's reflected like the thank level under one's avatar.

You could always... you know... not be a dickhead and then you won't have to worry about how many "strikes" you've earned... ;)

I agree with High Gain. Just think before you post, and you'll be fine and not have to worry about anything. Any and all trouble I've gotten into here is strictly my own fault for being an obnoxious dumbass. Like Will Smith once said, don't start nothing, then there won't be nothing...

I was once banned for posting in a thread that was "too stupid for OT". Things like that can be hard to predict . I do try to keep to the rules, though. It's not that hard.

It's not about the ban, it's how users handle the ban which is why the infraction system as well as what Pete is suggesting just won't work.

All a ban really is, is a way to stop people from posting material that goes against the forum rules. It doesn't stay with or limit a users account, it doesn't inflict a monetary penalty, and it doesn't stop users from viewing the forum.

It's just a "hey, don't post like that anymore".

Though, you'd swear we were cutting people's balls off by the way they flip out and throw tantrums because they can't post for a few days.

I always wonder about that huge emotional reaction, the rush to create a different user name, and so on.

Then again, I wonder about a lot of things.

Yeah, a paintball forum I was on before here used the infraction method for banning, and it didn't really help, and in some threads made it a lot worse because of how often people would report posts that they didn't like.

Granted if they had the "rep" system you guys have, it probably would have been much, much more of an issue.

I'd like to think of this in the same way as EHX's new wah pedal - It's a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist. If showing how many times a person has been banned were actually helpful, then I'd be all for it. But really, you don't learn a whole ton from if a person has been banned or not. And I agree with Explorer, I don't really see the fuss with bans, anyway. I wouldn't really care if I weren't able to post, I mostly lurk, anyway

Now, if I were perma-banned, that'd be a different story. But I'm gonna try my hardest to avoid that, so yeah.
