Just picked this up of my bud who was the original owner. I remember the day he got it. 1999 Ibanez Prestige RG 3120 in twilight blue. Needs acouple odds and ends and a good cleaning. Has some gouges in the back but couldn't pass it up. Looks like that Jackson I just got needs to find a new home.

I love those (particularly in that finish too), a buddy in high school had one and I was super-jealous of that guitar because at the time I was still rocking a lower-end Ibanez AX model...

After playing for awhile today I was surprised at how it sounds acoustically. Its really trebly and doesn't have a lot of mids, thought that was odd for a mahogany bodied guitar. The neck is alittle beefier than I expected too, def not as small as any 90's mij Ibanez or Jackson 1 pieces. More of a round C shape than the D shape of the newer multi piece Ibanez necks. Was also surprised when I first looked at it that the stuff that looks like binding around the top is actually the sides of the flame maple top just not stained. Great guitar though and my first Prestige. Time to rip it apart for a good cleaning and setup. Will post picks prob tomorrow.

I'm not sure why they named it twilight blue as it looks like plain old teal to me lol.

Nice dude! I always wanted one of those but never had the cash. I got an rg520qs instead and a pro setup/leveling on top.
Both are some of the best ibbys ever made. Mine's a 99 too. I put the tone zone/air norton combo in it to better emulate the 3120. It has a norton in it now.

    Enjoy!

Thanks. I've wanted this guitar since I first saw it when my buddy got it in 99, finally got it woooo.

These have tone zone / paf pro combo's not Norton and it will sound different due to the Mahogany body with 1/4 maple cap vs your basswood body. 520's are sweet guitars still.

i own the red one and 2 rg520qs(well, one stock and the other with a sharktooth neck, both with lo-pro's) and all have air norton/tone zones. those are indeed some of the finest instruments ibanez has ever produced. i have always wanted the twilight blue RG3120 to match the red RG3120 i have and wouldn't mind snagging the purple RGT3120 to match my brown one.
congrats on owning a fine example of ibanez (true) prestige.

How does the rgt3120 compare to the rg3120 version's? I had a korean rgt42 at one point and really loved the flat spot on the center of the neck - those are completely different guitars and necks but it was actually a pretty nice guitar.

the RGT42 is actually a cool guitar. i own the fixed bridge RGT42DXFXQM in green, so i can directly compare the necks. here's the rundown:

    RGT42: wizard 2
    RGT3120: ultra
    RG3120: wizard

tbh, the prestige wizard neck on the RG3120 is more like a bulkier wizard. compared to the tons of japanese RG5xx and RG7xx guitars i own, this one is a tad beefier with the same vibe.
the ultra neck is the same neck that the early JPM100, RBM, and radius models. i can vouch for this due to once owning an RBM1 and currently owning a R540 as well as playing my buddy's JPM100. this neck is the same on my RG2120x.
the wizard 2 on the RGT42 is a bit beefier and more solid feeling than those on the bolt on variants. i have a couple of beater korean/chinese RGs and i feel that the biggest culprit of the feel is the high gloss of the neck throughs. the RG3120 doesn't suffer from the thick coat of clear. all 3 necks are amazingly comfy(wizard is my favorite), but the ultra is like a thinner strat C shape, but not as wide and flat as a wizard 2. all 3 guitars in question are loaded with air norton/tone zone.

Not really liking the Tone zone. Really trebley and not a lot of bass, not very hot either.

uh...that doesn't sound like a tone zone at all, especially in mahogany. the TZ is a dark, almost muddy pickup with a good bit of output. the mids and the treble are fairly balanced with an exaggerated bottom and the mids of mahogany really supercharge this pickup.
2 things, either it's not a TZ or it's wired incorrectly.
in almost every mahogany ibanez i own i have an AN/TZ setup and none of them sound as you describe. the number i have is around 20+.

Got it pretty much clesned up, lots of tooth brush action lol. I need to find a cosmo black knob and string tree now. Weird that these didn't come with truss rod covers. Gotta give the frets some loving in the next few days and do a proper setup and then I'll post more pics.
