Hey everybody, got a few questions for the esteemed community around here.

My question is this: what amp heads are good for use with an 8-string guitar? What I desire in my tone is a good amount of gain (I am in a technical metal band) but I dont want fuzzy, muddy distortion, I want clarity in the gain so all the notes I'm playing can be heard.

I've tried out a few amps and so far the closest I've come to finding what i want is the Peavy 6505. Ive heard that the 6505 + has better cleans though, can anyone confirm that?

Any and all recommendations are appreciated.

Also can anyone recommend the best loop station on the market?

    Thanks everybody!

    Matthias

5150 II/III with a tube screamer in front of it would probably suit your needs.

6505+ doesn't have better cleans. I've finally got the tone I want (for now at least) with an Engl Invader. Maybe look into that depending on your budget. Or Axe fx.

Lower the gain. Get good clear pickups. Pickup a line 6 pod x3 or hd pro. Unless you have coin to drop for an axe fx. Also Carvin has nice cabs.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. jjcor, how much might an invader set me back price wise, and would you say its worth it? Never having played one before would someplace like guitar center have one one on display to try out? And I've heard a lot about axfx, but again I haven't played one, can anyone tell me if they are all that they say they are?

And what about loop stations? Any tips?

You can find an invader for about 2000$ used and new are about 2800$. I love mine. Channel 3 gain is super clear and articulate. If you bought and axe fx II you wouldn't have to buy a loop station cause it has a built in looper. But you have to factor in a power amp and MIDI controller if you go the axe route.

Good god man, $2,800? Thats a lot of cheese!

Have you tried axe fx? I know bands like Meshuggah and Periphery use them but are they really all they're made out to be?

Welcome to the land of big boy amps . Those are cheap in comparison to some of the things you'll run across.

I can't comment on the Axe-Fx, but from what I've seen and heard, they're all that and more. Then again, there are those that don't like them. Also think of looking into the Kemper Profiling amps. I've heard a lot of good about them too.

I wish I could spend $2800 on an amp. Exchange rate excluded, the damn shipping to New Zealand is murderous.

As far as the axe fx, I liked mine but I foun myself tweaking more than actually playing. It seems to be the only downside to it. But if you love to tweak than its perfect for you. Im thinking about buying another one to use for fx and the clean amps on it. But thats just me looking for that "perfect tone". But if you think $2800 is alot than the axe fx may not be for you either. After you get everything together for it you'll be spending an easy $2200. And thats if you get one used!

Well folks, after trolling the internet for hours looking at Engl amps I think Ive fallen in love. I would really like to play one sometime though before i get my hopes too high, does anyone know a retailer of Engl amps where i could try one out?

And valennic, i am TOO a big boy... :p

One more thing folks, and this is a little off topic, but my 8-string guitar has an original Kahler tremolo on it and i have struggled to keep it in tune to the same standard as a Floyd Rose.

Is there any way i might be able to improve its ability to stay in tune? Is that really even possible or am i dreaming too big here?

What guitar is it? Locking tunes or locking nutt are reall helpful with tuning issues.
If your on low budget, then I'd still look for a 6505. Its a great amp, theres a reason why many big metal band choose those instead of expensive amps.

That said, ENGLs are great. I used to own a Fireball before, and one day I'll definetly pick up an Invader or Savage.
What you want, is an amp with much dynamics and headroom. The more power, the better as the lower frequecies will sound clearer. This is why most bass amps are 500W ++

Ohh ok i think i get what youre saying babushka, that with an ERG you need that extra wattage and headroom to really get good gain but keep clarity? That makes some sense, because those big low strings are of a much lower frequency.

As far as which guitar has the Kahler on it, i have an Agile Interceptor Pro 828. Its my true love lol its the best guitar ive ever owned by far. Anyhow, yes it does have a locking nutt, and the Kahler is one of the nicer USA made ones.
