Hey I saw a bid on ebay and I'm wondering if that Universe is legit. The pickguard and the knobs look cheap, and it could've been easily put in an original case. But I'm not that familiar with Ibanez so I'm seeking some help here!

These are pics from the seller:

    What do you think?
    Thanks in advance!

Looks legit. Fakes wouldn’t usually use an actual Lo Pro 7.

Looks like the pickguard still has the original plastic protective covering on it, which is peeling at the edges, which maybe is what looks odd to you.

Great! Thanks for the answers :)
Yeah it has the plastic over it, but that seems odd as well lol since the guitar was made 2001.

Agree with the above.. Not a huge amount of love for these, are they that different from the older models?

    Depends.

The UV777PBKs were the longest running Universe model, as such there were multiple variants.

The original ones, 98' to 00', weren't wildly different from the UV7 models. They kept the all maple necks and Lo-Pro trems. They added the AANJ and the neck got a hair thicker.

After that they went to the Maple and Bubinga necks and they got slightly rounder. And in 04' they moved to Edge Pro and the five piece necks.

Eventually they brought back the Lo-Pro.

They're all great, but have thier own feel.

    Thanks :)

I always saw a universe somewhere in my future, but never this one. Maybe I should play a few and judge it from there.

    Act fast.

Even these are getting harder and harder to find, especially for a good price.

Ten years ago you could hardly give these away for $1k. Now finding one in great shape, with all the fixens is getting close to twice that.

I'd have to have about 4 guitars I want more than a universe before I considered it. I can't honestly think of a reason I'd need the Universe over a nice second hand J.Custom for a similar price.

As I only own eight of those :flex: (UV from the early 90), all the necks are a bit different, but organic like they have their own personnality and fantastic anyway
I just played my MKR a few minutes ago blues style and it's a toy
Can't explain why - maybe a question of hand ?

The early UVs were built before automated neck carving. They were all done by hand, hence the variation.

EDIT: To be more specific, the blanks were shaped with a copy-carver,but the final shaping, sanding and finishing were done by hand.

And let me add the black '97 in the list - they aren't strictly "early 90s" but still with magic made
That's why the Jem 7v7 and the recent 30th (finish design aside) don't excite me
I owned an Apex100 and a 2077xl that I got rid of (please tell me when my English isn't correct)

Looks legit to me. I have one of the newer versions with the edge pro and rounder neck profile. It plays like a champ and I love that thing. That being said I also have a uv7bk that I love little more.
