I'm selling my Engl Powerball 2 and I've been offered a trade for a Mesa single Rectifier rectoverb with black plate.

At first I was like "hell no", but I'm on a huge mesa gas and I'm very tempted.

    Would you do the trade?

What do you not like about the PB2 and what do you want from the Single Rec?

I would because IMO the PB2 is one of the worst amps I've ever played but that's just my :2c:
But since you bought it, you probably like it more than I do.

Absolutely not, the single rec's are garbage.

The PB2 is a great brutal amp but compressed and dark. Amazing if you are the only guitarist in your band but not the best when paired with other amps like 5150/6505 or boosted Recto.

I play in a band when the other guitarist has a 6505 and most of the time, when we play live, the PA sucks or there's no possibility to mic the cab. In those cases the Powerball really suffers a lot while rectos and peaveys are far better.

Plus we play with 7 and 8 string guitar.

A single Rec? That's a ripoff you are getting fleeced. Heck I would consider trading my Triple Crown for a PB2 if I didn't love my TC so much. But that's more equitable.

Then I'd probably pass on the trade. :2c:

I don't really know the single rec enough to give a solid advice. But the guy lives in Italy. If that's comparable to Germany, then PB2s can be had for cheap like sand on the beach. Mesas are a bit rarer because they are so overpriced here.

I've heard good things about the single rec personally, and I want one, but if you are in the states that's a terrible trade. Powerball cost a ton more.

I ended up passing on the trade.
The value of the amps is equal but I'd rather sell the amp for cash and save for a Mark series head.

You are getting the short end of the trade. Also, Single Rectifiers never came stock with black treadplate grills FYI. Do more research.

The value of those amps are absolutely not equal. Mesa Single Rec's are fairly cheap (sub $800), and Engl Powerball's are easily $1000-1300 in the US. Personally I don't think a Dual Rec is even a fair trade for a Powerball, but that's just me.

I also owned a Single Rec once for about a week, it was not an amp I'd recommend. My JCA50 literally stomped all over it.

Why would you do such an awful trade (imo) ? LOL
The single rectos arent really great.
    My recommendation :

    SELL THE PB2

BUY AN EARLY TREMOVERB!! That's the cheapest way to get into the 2-channel Dual Recto territory. This also gives you a more desirable revision. They also cost about the same as a single recto on the used market and are a MUCH better amp. Highly underrated. Really shocks me how cheap they sell lol

In Europe a brand new PB2 Is about 1500€, which Is the price for a single Rectifier.
On the used market they both sell for 900/1000€.

You could find a Dual Rectifier within that price range if you're lucky.

I guess you have to be very lucky, I've never seen a Dual Rectifier going for less then 1300/1400€.

Anyway iI refused the offer. Despite the similar value, the PB2 has more to offer and I'd rather sell it.

Oh, you’re in Europe. This thread makes sense now. I grew up in the UK, so over that side Engl’s are way more common than Mesa’s.

In your case, you could likely trade the PB to a Dual Rec. Or just sell it out right and find a Mesa after. eBay UK might be able to help with that.

I see euro voltage dual rectos go for around £700 pretty regularly here in the UK. Including 2 channels when they pop up (not as common as 3 channels). I’ve got Ebay alerts set up for tons of stuff, it’s kinda fun to just track the price of interesting gear.

Usually people post them up for around 1k or more, then they sit for ages and get relisted over and over until the price drops. There’s some guy who has been trying to sell a tremoverb for like £2,400 for months.

I think if you’re looking for a trade, a dual recto would be reasonable, but I don’t know what the market is like in Italy. I wouldn’t have guessed much different than the U.K. but maybe I’m wrong.
