Most players that use/uses analog delays use them straight in vs a loop. On a recent episode of Tone Talk there was a recommendation for MXR Carbon Copy, the deluxe version seems very nice.

The trick to using delay in front of the amp, especially with high gain, is to avoid digital/bright/clean delays and keep the mix and repeats fairly low.

I've used a Carbon Copy with good results in this way, though I still prefer delay and reverb in the FX loop for a cleaner sound. I would also look into the MXR Echoplex and EHX Memory Boy in the same price range as the Carbon Copy

I have a Love Pedal Echophonic Jr that works well in front of a JCM 800. It can give several pretty clean repeats that are pretty loud. There’s a Pete Thorn demo showcasing what it can do in front of a Marshall.

But this is with an amp that’s just “crunchy” and boosted with an OD pedal (in front of the delay) for higher gain. The same pedal simply didn’t work that well in front of a Recto, but I’m not sure anything would.

Use whatever suits your budget and needs best, there is no magic bullet. I would not avoid digital delays as someone else said, though it has been a couple of years since i was using high gain in a band situation.

Once you find out what mix ratio works, the world is your oyster.

I've heard twice now that the Dr Scientist Reverberator works great in front of an amp, partly because it has a level control.
I came really close to buying one once, but then went with the EQD Ghost Echo instead.

Pete Thorn had good results with the Echoplex delay from Dunlop before the gain.
