I'm dumb and listen to old crap and don't follow any good blogs anymore (like The Living Doorway, file sharing aside that blog really helped sculpt my taste) but I like in 2017

    Sutrah - Dunes
    MA - Kingdoms Disdained
    TBDM - Nightbringers
    Glassjaw - Material Control

    Entheos - Dark Future
Suffocation - ...Of the Dark Light

Stuff I slept on/ was disspointed by

Got a chance to sit down and listen to Go Be Forgotten and it’s got seriously good ambient aspects, more listens are needed

    Wintersun - The Forest Seasons

It's gotta be. When I first listened I wasn't enraptured like I was with Time. But then I had the chance to catch them on tour last month, and they performed the whole thing live. It was so fucking amazing. So I went back and listened to it all again... and again and again and again.

Now we just need Time II.

I've heard about 5 albums mentioned in this thread, and none of them were that great. The massive volume of other albums mentioned here is so huge it makes me want to crawl into a hole instead of searching all of them to find out what style they are and then finding random tracks on youtube to see if I'd like them. Guess this is what it's like to be old.

I anticipate Bjork - Utopia to be the best based on...nothing, as I haven't heard it yet. Out of the 10 or so I've heard, I liked Pain of Salvation, Myrkur, Enslaved, Paul Dietrich Quintet, Converge and The Contortionist but wasn't blown away by any of them. I was pretty let down by the new Anathema, Tigran Hamasyan and Steven Wilson albums. All the stuff I heard for the first time in 2017 that was really great came out in the last few years!!

Pain of Salvation - In The Passing Light Of Day
A much more humble and human effort from the band, very affecting.
John 5 - Season Of The Witch
Such variety, such atmosphere, utter mastery of the guitar.
    Primus - The Desaturating Seven
Great journey and story, really worth listening to over and over.

I hear ya. While I definitely have my favorites from this year, none of them blew me away. Actually, it's been a long time since I've heard an album that gave me goosebumps (my ultimate measure of a great album, haha). Could be I'm just getting old as well.

I shall eagerly await the new At The Gates album in 2018...

I've also given the Black Dahlia Murder new album a few listens at the gym but I'll be damned if I remember any of it. I just know it's a great source of motivation.

I completely forgot The Rainbow Goblins existed until this album came out. My parents used to read that to me all the time as a kid and it kinda scared me lol.

I go through years where I think that, but then the next year I hear something that is just constant goosebumps and I promote it to my top 10-20 albums ever and feel less old. I think it's a matter of how much time I spend looking for albums, or just pure luck with what I hear. There have just been a bunch of average albums from the few bands I follow and I have no clue what anything else is. I did hear some good bands for the first time. Ex, I was totally unaware of what Deafheaven was, and when I heard their first two LPs I was like :OOOOOOO!!

Same deal with the moldy oldy Julee Cruise - Floating Into the Night. There are only a few tracks on there that I like, but DAMN. Into the Night, Falling, and especially The World Spins blew me away and I listened to them on repeat for hours!

    The Contortionist- Clairvoyant
    GlassJaw- Material Control
    Converge- The Dusk In Us

    1. Meshuggah
    2. Animals As Leaders/Plini/Nick Johnston
    3. Dillinger Escape Plan
    4. Caligulas Horse and I Built The Sky
    5. Karnivool
    6. Sleepmakeswaves
    7. Rosetta
    8. Orsome Welles
    9. Sanzu
    10. Periphery

All of these shows above delivered so much, the caliber of musicianship was incredible and the efforts from the bands a highlight for me this year. I was fortunate enough to see some of my fav bands in this list and some that surprised me 7-10 in particular. The pay of the first two shows mentioned being within a week of one and other was simply amazing and I was happy to see my wife walk away a converted fan of Meshuggah and Animals As Leaders.

    Now the bad.

    Worst of 2017 live performance

Anathema... what a pure waste of money that was. With out a doubt the inner turmoil that band has going on and the egos and diva behaviour spilled out and really effected their show and it was super disappointing to witness members of the audience did not hesitate in making it known by leaving after the mass amounts of technical difficulties, arguing with fans that had been stung $150 plus for meet and greats and general admission punters. Vince didn’t give a shit about the show at all. nearly an hour late on stage and the efforts that they put into the performance have been remarked by many as subpar. Danny refused to come to the venue.

and the poor highered Stage tech was an absolute mess after being screamed at multiple times at one point that it took place off stage as Danny took it upon himself to belittle this poor dude that was trying his hardest with it all and tear him a new one within sight of members of the audience. Completely unprofessional, they didn’t give this dude a list of tunings, requirements, Guitar changes or anything.

The most embarrassing part... the amount of backing tracks the band relies on cutting out during the performance they closed the show with Untouchable Part 1 & 2 “acoustically” both guitarist took to playing acoustics and during both the glaringly obvious fact they weren’t playing was when the instruments dropped out and the miming of their performance was staring the audience back in the face the out of sync recovery and realisation of the audience at the point drifted into a point of no redemption.

The biggest thing that can be learnt from the show is know your shit. Don’t just hire in a bunch of stuff and mash it together and expect it to be “all right on the night” and if you are going to work it’s that many backing tracks and amp sounds (4 jcms each) go digital.
