Alright, this is a band that I've been late to get into and I feel like I'd really enjoy a lot of their material. So I want to take a poll on best albums/which ones to get started on. I can already tell that ObZen is really good, but I want to hear what you all think.

I had to go with the two that I listen to most often, though I'm fond of the entire catalog.

DEI or the original Nothing, though I love all of their work. DEI in particular for the jazz fusion influence and wackadoo soloing!

Been listening since DEI/Chaosphere era, for me it's Koloss all the way. Why? Two reasons:
    1. Production - Jens (IMHO) never sounded so good.
    2. Groove. Groooooove.

I like obzen the best because for me its got the easiest songs to get into if i just want a quick listen. I like the mix out of all the other albums. Catch 33 is my second favorite but i listen to it in its entirety and its more like background music that i lose my self in when driving on a long trip. I rarely just skip to a single song in catch 33. Koloss was a little disappointing for me. Something with the mix and more straight ahead playing that kind of irks me. But its still a solid album. But honestly each one is great and i listen to them all. Cant wait for the next one :hbang:

Oh god, I don't know how to decide between Destroy Erase Improve and Koloss....

EDIT: Oh, wait, I can pick multiple options. That solves that problem!
Also, Contradictions Collapse is a really cool Thrash album as well, and interesting hearing Jens playing guitar.

Hard to choose one as they're all top notch...but I went with Chaosphere. The energy on that album is untouchable.

The original Nothing is my favorite, not the remastered version. Just sounds so dirty it's beautiful.

DEI is my fav Meshuggah album.. I also like Contradictions because of the thrashiness. Frederik's solo album "Sol Niger Within" is my favorite of anything Meshuggah related though.

    Chaosphere easily.

    Meshuggah at their most visceral.

    Yup, or DEI.

I praise Contradictions a lot, and used to consider it my favorite Meshuggah album, but Chaosphere is just pure Meshuggah, IMO. The precision and complexity they're known for, as well as a natural-sounding aggression

Nothing was revolutionary. What is "pure" Meshuggah is highly subjective. I personally think during and after Nothing they became more Meshuggah; they found their style, and largely got rid of the thrash vibe.

    None EP
    I = Chaosphere = Re:Nothing = Catch Thirtythree (One-two punch of Dehumanization and Sum)
The cool songs on Rare Trax (By Emptyness Abducted and Don't Speak) = Koloss = Obzen
    DEI
    Contradictions Collapse

Catch 33, definitely. I love Nothing and obZen, but Catch 33 is just an incredible album. Just one, full-on concept executed flawlessly from beginning to end.

Actually, I only just realised it was album. I didn't think it was anything else though, either... that's how much it stands out to me.

DEI is by far my favorite album. Everything else is pretty equal to me.

Voting for more than one is cheating!

Chaosphere has been the clear choice for best for me since I first got into it, only the "I" ep ever threatened to dethrone it, but that has some incredibly repetitive and boring sections to stretch out the running time which took it down a notch. I love almost all of their albums, but Chaosphere was a landmark album in many ways and remains the most fun to listen to for me. I'd put CC at the bottom and Nothing/DEI about tied for least good of the rest. Not really sure how I'd rank Catch 33/Koloss/Obzen, they all have their strengths and weaknesses and are all excellent.

Somehow I've never listened to Rare Trax, and I've never really had any desire to. I know I've heard "War" several times (which is hilarious), and the alternate version of Concatenation, but that's it.

I'm surprised the love for Nothing in this thread. It's a pretty polarizing album among meshuggah fans. I love everything they have ever put out really. Maybe we should start listing our favorite songs? Get into some real minutiae.
