I'm pretty sure you can get a Little Mark 3 for a bit under a grand here. If you're willing to used Ampeg Svt 3's come up for around $1000 sometimes

I think any of those "mini" heads are just fantastic - Markbass/Ampge/GK etc. etc. They have a ton of power and are very light.

Another option I quite like is buying a PA power amp, then mix and matching pedals for your "preamp" section. Newer PA power amps have an insane amount of power and are incredibly light. I have a Peavey IPR and it has been great. Then, I have a pedal board with a B7K, tuner, wireless and compressor on it. The nice thing about the pedal board is the modular nature of it - if I didn't like my compressor, or my distortion, or if I wanted to add something else entirely, I already have the platform to do so, independent of entirely replacing my bass head. Also, pedal tuners are the ..... I don't know how people can live on stage without them.

Aguilar Tone Hammer 500. I have one and it is seriously loud, punchy and clear, and it'll do some great overdriven tones as well. Been pounding on it for a few years now with no reliability issues, cutouts or other problems, and it plays nicely with effects. At ~4lbs., it's an easy haul too.

I had a Markbass F1 and it was alright. You definitely need pedals to get some growl ouit of it.

I'm running a Orange Bass Terror and it's phat and loud. I also have a Hartke HA5500 but I've not had the chance to run it live. Looking forward to it!

I quite liked the Fender V3 Rumble series. Theres a lightweight 500w bass head that's probably in your price range.

I had an Orange TerrorBass 500. Loved it. EQ became more responsive once I switched out the stock tubes as well. (Preamp tubes with solid state power)
