So I'm rather dissatisfied with my current tones across almost all the music I play. I play a bit of everything, but mostly metal and prog (think Dream Theater, Tool, Animals as Leaders, Machine Head, Disturbed and Trivium). I think my tone is a bit dry and lacking in clarity and definition, and falls apart particularly on notes much below c#.

My current setup is an Ibanez TAM10 going through a Line 6 Pod HD500x out of KRK Rokit 5s. I'm certain my issues are the second 2 there. I'm thinking the main options available to me are move to a proper amp and use the HD500x for effects or run it through a power amp and cab. I was ideally looking to spend up to £700, but I can stretch that if there's a solid jump for a little more. I'm located in South UK and able to travel to Dawsons, Andertons and GAK. It'll mostly be used at home both by myself and jamming with another guitarist and bassist. The two that caught my eye were the 6505+ combo and the Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister, but I've heard the former has lackluster cleans and an issue with the FX loop and I'm unsure if the latter will handle the higher gain tones I'm looking for.

If there's anything else you need to know, please ask. Thanks in advance!

Before swapping gear for clarity and definition, perhaps have a look at your playing. If it's dry, add a touch of reverb. But being able to play cleanly is going to have a huge effect on what the rest of the signal chain can do. I've never heard you play, for all I know you're the next JP - but people like to spend money before checking their technique .

The HD500 hasn't exactly been the cream of the crop when it comes to modelers. Probably the best thing you could do is to pair it with an impulse response loader for cab simulation. Mooer Radar is a cheap hardware unit for that or you could use a computer plugin which others can probably recommend. Pair that with high quality IRs like OwnHammer and it should sound a lot better than the HD500's built-in cab sim.

As much as I'm not a fan of Line 6 stuff, I've heard people say they like what they get from them. My guess is the Rokits and stock IRs are what you don't like, if I had to guess. IMO a real cab or good IR can make or break a tone.

    Definitely use external IRs.

I used the same monitors and an hd500 for home jamming and they sound great together.

What amp are you using in the 500?

My guess would be that the speaker are too small/weak/neutral to "kick ass".

Use external IR's, just like everyone else said, and don't over process your patches. Just gate, screamer, amp, and slight eq'ing for the hi-gain patches. Make shure that you're using input and output modes that fit to your situation of use. Or just for live tones neutral power amp and decent cab.
