I just did an International Physics Olympiad paper

Well, one to qualify for the actual thing and I tell you, it is the first time I have truly sat in an exam just befuddled

It was absolutely ridiculous

Just thought I'd share my realisation that I can't do everything..

That was horrible

Edit:

Didn't know whether this was off topic but science seems pretty formal stuff

I'm not sure how those are marked, but did you at least get down some workings on some of the questions?
When I was taking the entrance exams for Maths+Physics at Cambridge I didn't get a single answer right, but they offered me a place because they liked how I'd approached the problems.

Try and go through the paper with a teacher or something if you can. It can really help to have the questions broken down properly, and the experience will help your problem-solving a lot.

Dont feel bad. Find comfort in the fact that theres people out there like me, trying to be a stupid soldier who still has to relearn quadratic equations just to qualify.

Ah yeah I was pretty much writing throughout the 3 and a half hour exam... just not really writing stuff that I knew

That's nice to hear, i'll be taking Maths entrance papers for cambridge next summer.

Don't get me wrong, I love maths and physics, just not when I can't do it

i took math classes in highschool, i dont like math. im anti-math, even. i had a very irrational (yet rational?) reason for not liking math class.

it didnt help that i had a great math tutor who was very helpful.. but step foot into class/exams and i was pretty much screwed. 5 extra hours a week of studying to get 60's? kick. in. the. balls.

anyway, i wont rant in buddy's thread that's a dick move IMO.

enjoy yer numbers guys!

You mean such incredibly fascinating gems like 9*(10^16)*(m^2)*(s^-2)?
If I wanted to be one of the absolute most boring, pretentious and unlikeable people alive, then yeah I'd get into math.

So you've never met me in person, but you can hold a grudge and a clipboard long enough to remember me correcting someone in the most famous equation in physics... congratulations, you're an internet badass!

Somehow I doubt you've actually met too many mathematicians or physicists. I correct one bogus statement with an actual physical law, and all of a sudden I'm not only boring, pretentious, and uninteresting, but also trying to suck the fun out of life by not being a twat with a bunch of new-age nonsense as a belief about the afterlife? You might as well try stereotyping all guitarists as arrogant sheep because of an Ibanez argument on the board.

I want to take the Physics GRE at some point because I heard it was epically epic, but I have a little bit of work to go before I have a shot at getting anything right.

Woah, people actually want to take the physics GRE? Godspeed, man. I didn't find that exam even close to enjoyable, especially the questions designed to derail theorists, like "what is the best device to measure temperatures above 10^4 K?"

Haha, pretty true, nice comparison. My CompSci degree was handled by the maths faculty of my university and some of the shit that those guys did was pretty weird in a 'forget everything you learned up to now' way. I only did logic (OK) and formal methods for mathematically proving code (not OK) at degree level and that was, erm, interesting.

Anyhoo, OP, good luck!

I'm a physics and space nerd I admit it. Though it's nothing I do professionally just find fascinating on many levels beyond mere science. I think physics introduces a whole world of philosophy and questions but I digress. I think I could hang with most physicists in the RF and atmospheric propagation areas... seriously.

If you're implying that the relation between the conversion of mass to energy, in one of the most famous equations ever, developed by one of the greatest minds of our time is not at all fascinating or interesting, and is in fact boring and pretentious, and furthermore you'd rather believe pseudo-bullshit like "infinity is the gateway between mass and energy," then I've nothing but pity for you.

Its a logical fallacy to assert that I thought the other guy's stoner idea was right I mostly take exception to JBroll's ceaseless e-pissing contest that permeates every post he makes. If I was going to correct someone in a thread about beliefs where no one is a math major, I'd use the A Brief History of Time approach and put it into layman's terms and not be a dick about it. Of course, JBroll never rolls like that. He loves being a dick.

I find some of the stuff that is done in physics is fascinating, I was in a high school physics class for two weeks, and I do not have the math skills have to even considered staying in that class.

Being a dick? It's called having a sense of humor and being occasionally sarcastic. Somehow everyone who has met me in person, and almost everyone who has actually discussed anything with me without trying to extrapolate from a few quick snippets that I'm an arrogant jackass, has gotten a different impression of me... and as a result I doubt that you're really aiming for anything other than trying to insult me based on misread nonsense on a forum.
