Am I the only one around who thinks Steinberger guitars have always been well ahead of their time? To this day, I've never played a more comfortable & more versatile instrument than my old Steinberger. Man, if they made a 7-string, that would instantly be my main guitar.

Although I've got to have a 7 for End Theory, I'm joining an additional band that tunes mainly in E and Drop D. I think I may have to buy another Steinberger.

Yeah, THIS is the one I used to have. I got that GU-7R used for $200 & it outplayed everything! And yes, I was COMPLETELY surprised by that! Unfortunately, I went through a layoff a few years back thanks to 9/11, so I had to sell all my gear (minus the essentials). Now, I think I need to add another Steinberger to my collection. I may get the same GU-7R or just go big with a USA Newburgh model.

I love those black M-series ones with white binding. I remember seeing an ad for some guitar shop in Guitar Player years ago, and they had one of those with white pickups (or white rings) and it looked awesome.

Yep, that's the USA Newburgh model. They came either in black w/ white binding or white w/ black binding.

I was looking at a Steinberger for $300 not so long ago. Played one while I was in Japan, it was really odd.

^ Odd at first, but you'll get use to it. It's definately a show stopper though. Everyone I came across was very interested in it. Once I explained all of its advantages, people loved it. It's a misunderstood instrument. However, you gotta love having a fully floating trem & a hardtail bridge all in one that can accomodate a tuning change on the fly! Not to mention, a full string change in less than 3 minutes! With the lack of a headstock, the guitar sits in perfect playing position & balance.

Well, the Spirit models come with the cheaper EMG Select pickups (the USA come with active EMGs). For mine, I swapped out the bridge humbucker for a Carvin M22SD pickup & left the EMG Selects in the middle & neck positions. If you ever want a SCREAMIN' 6-string bridge pup, I highly recommend them. I came across it by accident. I went by my guitar tech's place to have the guitar set up. I told him that I had planned to change the pickups because they weren't hot enough for me. He happened to have a M22SD laying around in a clear box marked with the word "HOT!" We stuck it in & man, the fuckin' guitar started breathing fire! Overall, it's just a badass little pickup.
