I completely disagree with all this "well they should do research before they buy their kids a guitar. And if they get screwed, oh well." While I agree with doing research, if they look on ebay, and find a k-7 knockoff, and go and google "ibanez k-7" then they will find info on the actual k-7 model. They may or may not notice that the ebay fake, and any pics on google that they find look noticeably different, but if they see that they both say "ibanez k-7" They might think the ebay one is a different version or something and just go "oh well the older model is cheaper, so I can save a couple bucks" The fact that the guitar only costs like 2 bucks should caution them, but they might even see the shipping amount, and think "Oh well that's a fair price then" It's dumb to think that the shipping cost makes up for the 2 dollar opening bid, but not all parents trying to do something nice for their kids is l337 at ebay.

Any guitarist who knows about ibanez, or gibson or whatever, should know the difference, but a parent who isn't into guitars, can easily miss it. Saying shit like "oh well, who cares. All I got was a candy bar" is just plain ignorant. It sucks that that's all you got, but really why should there be any lack of compassion for parents trying to do something nice for their kids, and get screwed, because of what you got on your birthdays?
Agree with Scott here. It is just pure bitterness wishing that others don't get good presents because all you got was a candy bar. That's like hoping your friends will break up their girlfriends because you don't have a girlfriend and you never had a girlfriend. Or like the serial killers who were abused by their parents when they were young and thus abuse/kill other children (feeling that these children deserve what they went through). I think it's the same kind of logic.

Although I understand what urklvt is saying, buying a guitar for $100-400 for your son is quite a bit different than buying your own personal car for several thousand dollars. You may think that it's the same or even similar because you're a guitarist. But to people who don't play music, it's the same as buying an Xbox 360 or something along those lines (nothing like a car).

I have a lot of compassion in many of these cases. Don't blame them because they aren't familiar with instruments. There is no way a beginner, even read up on Gibson products, should be able to tell the difference between this Chinese "Gibson" and a real Gibson. To someone new to guitar (or just buying for someone else), even with information, these guitars will look the same.

I would categorize what they're doing as "doing something nice for their kids." Sure, it's not the smartest thing. My mother is not very good with computers. She once got an e-mail from a friend, telling her to delete a file in the Windows directory, because it was a virus. She was the only one at home at the time, so she freaked out and deleted the file. The file was actually one of the essential files for Windows and made us unable to get into the computer. We had to format the harddrive and reinstall Windows. My brother and I were very mad at her and printed out the e-mail she got and taped it to the computer so that she would never do anything drastic like that again without talking to one of us first. In retrospect, I think we were too hard on her. She was simply unfamiliar with the computer and did simply what seemed logical to her. I wouldn't characterize what she did as "idiocy" (although I would have called it that immediately when it happened).

I think some people are being too hard on these people. They do not deserve to get ripped off.

Cars vs guitars again. It's not the point. It's about purchasing in general. You buy guitars from music stores, cars from car dealerships, diamonds from jewelers, electronics from electronics stores, used stuff or cheap knockoff shit on eBay.

For God's sake people, stop harping on David for the candy bar thing. Chances are if you had to walk a mile in his shoes you'd be a simpering pansy fairy fuck with sociopathic tendencies and a headless Barbie doll fetish. And Naren, that "same kind of logic"... Come on man. That is not what David was saying at all. Lay off of him. Lay it on me, I can take it.

"Dude, you need to find the right fucking meds to be on, because you are the most unstable person I know."

I agree with urklvt (btw did you change your name?).

You should always do your research when making a major purchase, and if you want a cheap guitar I'm sure the local music store stocks some cheap-o $150 buck guitars.

I can see where some parents can panick with the whole oh no holiday crunch time my child must have this product mentality.
But they should still think before spending big bucks on the internet.

haha, February 7th, 1990. That's quite a generous offer, but really it's ok. I have nothing to truely bitch about. If you have extra money though, that you're looking to give away, there are plenty of charities for African children, the 2004 tsunami victims, etc. They need it a lot more than me.

And thank you. About 3-4 years ago, I was that psychopathetic tendencies fairy fuck, hahaha, but you get used to it eventually. And Naren, that's not at all what I'm saying. What I'm saying, is that if parents want to buy their kids something, they should do some research on it. Is it that hard to research? to look for minor details? to have a common knowledge of what is a persuasively fake auction? I don't think that's too much to ask for. I'm working my lil' behind off right now to be "more rich" one day, and when I have kids, I intend on giving them everything to their hearts desire. Of course I'm going to make them earn it, and learn the value of a dollar, but it's not like I'm going to deprive them of the fruits of life. The main reason why I want to make a load of money in my future, isn't really for myself... but more to have my own kid, or adopt one, and donate to those who need it. I want to give others what I wanted at that age.

OK - I know nothing about Gibson guitars, but my Dad just gave me this. I want you guys to have a look and let me know if it's a fake or not.

If it is (though I'm hoping it's not), can you let me know how you can tell? He's been buying a few guitars lately so I want to let him know what to look out for.

Nope, that's definitely 100% real.
It was made in '97 according to the serial number.

They're great guitars!
Not a total shred machine or anything but as a general rock guitar they take some beating.
