Do you ever get tempted... to the dark side?
Do you ever have those days where you think about going back to six strings? Don't get me wrong, hands down seven stringers are my first choice, but sometimes the temptation to go with a downtuned six is tough to resist.
The main thing that pulls at me is the choices in gear six stringers have. Even at the peak of the seven string craze, the choices were never as abundant but now that the market seems to have stabilized a little more the options are pretty limited (when compared to sixers). Of course, if I was able to make the transition back and forth it would be easier. I had to do a session the other day where I just couldn't get the kind of tone I needed out my Pet and I had to grab my backup Carvin six string to do the job. It felt so strange like I was fighting the instrument the whole time. I have serious respect for the guys that can bounce back and forth effortlessly. |

I own both, I play both. No "choice" necessary.

I've got my 6's setup in different tunings, so one is always in D, another in C. Handy to just pick up and play a song that's in those tunings. |

The lack of choice in sevens does get me down a bit. But i can switch back and forth pretty easily. I just prefer playing sevens because they're more fun!

I don't really think there's a lack of choice for sevens, but that's just me personally. I've got my custom 7 and an Ibanez RG1527, and other than that, I'd like a EBMM Petrucci with Piezos, and I had my eye on a Schecter a while back.
I suppose if you're after something like single coils in a 7, or some PRS or Parker 7's, you could be out of luck or you'd have to get something custom built. But other than that, I think there's a good selection of 7's out there. |

I seem to be able to switch between my seven and six acoustic without problem.
Though I play pretty different things on each guitar. |

It seems harder to go between six and seven electric, because I play both the same way. Acosutics I treat like a different instrument.

I've been doing it so long it doesn't bug me anymore, but the first 6 months or so (when I was gigging fairly often and using my 7620 and strat more-or-less in alteration) had a few pretty hairy moments...
I'm a seven stringer at heart, and probably always will be, but I doubt I could bring myself to sell my strat (even if I did get a seven string stratocaster), so I'll probably always have one or two around...

I used to switch back and forth all the time. We had a bunch of songs in drop d and standard tuning with a 7. I got tired of having to take time in a set to switch guitars, to I added a Sperzel D Thing drop d tuner to my 7s. Now it's like I have both guitars in one.
