08' Charvel

Charvel® Guitars

Scroll down a little and you can see some new Charvels. The prices look great on these for what they are, considering it will be less than $1000 street price, they look cool too, I'd like a So-Cal model to hot rod.

They're missing two frets.

Other than that i like em.
I'd love to get hold of one of the So-Cal ones and rout out under the bridge and mod a couple other things.

Well it's good to see that FMIC has come to their senses and released a line that working musicians can actually afford. But I can see a whole bunch of backlash from customers that bought the absurdly overpriced San Dimas reissues for the past couple of years. Because there's really not a lot of differences between these models and what was available as a "custom shop" version.

The spec sheet for the So-Cal says it's routed H-S-H. That's just begging to be modded to hell.

It was really good, but not good enough for the price. The cavity covers were both cut wrong and needed to be dug out with razor blades, the frets were smoothly filed, but uneven down the neck, and there were some finishing flaws on the neck. It just wasn't good enough to keep around.

Yes, they do.
On track again: these new Charvels are incredibly sexy, and the price is right. I'm trying to put in an order for the SoCal in Tangerine right now..

I don't remember exactly where I read this. But I was under the impression that FMIC was going to keep Charvel as a line solely for custom shop orders? So I guess they've changed their policy. Maybe it's because the San Dimas strathead reissues didn't sell as well as they thought, or they just overwhelmed with complaints about how expensive they were. But I really don't see how releasing this line is going to help dealers now get rid of the Charvels they currently have. If anything. Releasing this line probably just put a huge dent in the market for their custom shop models. An extra $2k for just a fancy paint job?

I'd say that you probably got out while the getting was good.

That sucks. I'm very surprised that Music Zoo is letting gtrs to be sent out like that.

I'll wait to try one out, and make sure that there's going to be an actual OFR on there. But if there's a real Floyd and they're put together well enough. I'll also be getting a So-Cal to tinker around with.

I'd like one of these just to mod and try out stuff in, I read somewhere on the Charvel website that it says you can't buy single bodies and necks 'currently'. Maybe that's something they will start doing again in the future, that'd be awesome.

Oh hell yeah. It'd be fun to get one of the tangerine-colored ones and do an HSH pickguard in something other than black. Now that I'm playing a lot of 6-string again (don't ask...), this is very tempting.

I think there was some debate within the company after the pricey stratheads basically flopped. It's obvious that FMIC is trying various things with the Charvel line to see if something will stick.

As to why this line is cheaper, I suspect there is a *lot* of standardization between this and the Fender USA line. Over on the JCF, the word appears to be that these are actually made on the Fender production line alongside the USA Strats. True? I have no idea, but it would make sense. It also wouldn't surprise me if these have a Ping Floyd, rather than an OFR.

The most important difference between any Strat and a vintage Charvel is in the neck carve and the fretboard radius. Charvel was founded essentially as a company providing non-suck replacement parts for the shitty Strats that Fender was making in the late '70s. It would be pretty ironic if Fender itself ends up being the one to make the more playable alternative to its own Strats.

Just saw this over on the JCF forums

Also, another point to clear up... the bridge is Korean. It's the same as the RR24 and the Techs at the factory absolutley love them. The guitars come set up with the proper neck angle for a top mount floyd and they have plenty of Pull Back range. The So-Cal has slightly less than the San Dimas due to the nature of the specs.
Oh well. I knew it was too good to be true. Anyone have any luck with this Korean version?

I love that Tangerine So Cal. Maple board, dimarzios, etc. = Awesome. I read that the Floyd is a Ping unit though and not an OFR. I wish they didn't mount the jack on the top of the So Cal also, but for what these will cost who really cares?

I've heard that the casting quality is more like the TRS trems than the OFR, but the good news is that, since the Ping is the same exact design as the OFR, it's an easy retrofit if you want to do that.

Of course, supposedly the Schaller plant itself isn't making the OFR quite as good as they used to, since old Mr. Schaller passed away.
