Ron seems to be continually out-doing himself with every guitar. That nut is stunning.
Please pass along my kudos.

MetalKen- Maybe Eric is getting a custom backplate made so he can access the Tremol-No.

"Thank YOU, Jim Day!"

Definitely Kevan! I should be speaking with him again this week or next, I owe him a thank-you for hooking me up with some parts.

Slightly off-topic but since you mentioned it, do you think I'll need to get a custom backplate if I install the T-No on my Thorn, Kev? I haven't had a chance to pick one up (i.e. got hit with that $2.5K tuition statement and became super-broke for the time being) so I haven't measured to see if I have the clearance or not but if I don't is there a way to have a backplate made that would fit my guitar? Thanks!

Cool. Ron's one of the good guys, and keeps the TGP guys on their toes (and their wallets empty. LOL).

If you can get a plastic backplate from Ron, there are templates up on the T-No website for cutting access holes. I'm not sure of the dimensions of his backplates, or I'd have a template for his guitars up there already.

I know...I know....using the word "plastic" and "Thorn Guitar" in the same sentence is kinda like "dry campus" and "Cool!". MAYBE he's got some backplate material stuffed in a cold, dark corner of the shop somewhere.

Depending on the depth of the spring cavity route, you should be okay installing a T-No in there. Very few builders do less than 13mm (1/2") cavities. Vigier does them on occasion, and trem springs sometimes touch the bottom of the cavity. A few vintage strats- right at the edge of the CBS era- have shallow spring cavitites too.
I'm pretty sure your Thorn will be deep enough to do a T-No.

Please let Ron know that I'll be at Summer NAMM and would love to sit down with him for a couple of minutes over an adult beverage. Toss him my cell.

Ah yeah only the Artisan Master models (and apparently a few sneaky Deluxes it seems... I was told back in the day he wouldn't do it... but..) get the matching wooden control cavity covers. Mine are plastic which is fine, I might just be able to cut it out using the template myself... what is the best tool to cut through those plastic backplates while keeping them looking stock? I think he only visits the winter NAMM because he's right up the road from Annaheim and due to him really plowing through his backlog I get the feeling he won't be hitting up Summer NAMM this year unfortunately man. I'll give him your number though and tell him you said hi for sure.

Cool. I'll see him in Anaheim then.

For trimming the plastic, a simple Dremel and a cutting bit will work great. You can use some fine grit sandpaper (400 or 600) to smooth out the inside faces of the hole and give a very light radius to the outside edge. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes or so.

The templates on the T-No site are just GUIDELINES. They are not exact regarding access hole placement because setups vary between guitars. Your particular T-No might be a little bit forward or a little bit back from the hole pictured in the templates.

Use some masking tape to mark off where your thumbscrews are, horizontally and vertically on the backplate. That will give you proper placement and the minimum size hole to cut.

It's pretty easy, but if you want me to cut it, do the masking tape marks and send me the backplate. I'll do it for ya.

Might have to take you up on that Kev, I'm afraid of ruining it due to nubdom on this one! When are you coming to Va?!
