New Epiphone Prophecy models - ebony board? Liars!

Played the SG and Les Paul today. Either Epiphone is lying about the woods used on the guitar (which isn't unusual), or the spec sheets I read were inaccurate. But neither has an ebony board. Well, it could be - but both the ones I played instead looked like rosewood dyed black or the absolutely shittiest pieces of ebony I have ever seen.

They both also played like death and had very crappy finishes but they sounded alright. Just an FYI for anyone who was interested in one of them..

They were the absolute worst I've ever seen then - the grain was huuuuuge and patterned the same way as my S7320's rosewood board. The boards also didn't feel slick like the ebony on my SLSMG or my old SG Silverburst

I never checked the spec sheet on them but I always assumed they were meant to be rosewood dyed black.

The 3 I tried all played fairly well though.

holy fuck!

Epiphone has always done this. They claimed their gothic models were ebony, when they were clearly just dyed Rosewood. Epiphones don't use ebony.

Avoid Epiphone, there are much better options for imports IMO. ESP, Schecter, Agile, whathaveyou.

The regular Epiphones suck pretty bad, from the examples I've played. But the Epiphone Elitist Les Pauls are damned nice. Basically, they're made in the Fujigen factory in Japan and are at least as good as anything Gibson USA is putting out. They're easily recognizable because they have a different headstock than the Chinese-made Epiphones. Of course, they cost a fair bit more, too.

No ebony boards on the Elitists, however, which is partially why I haven't succumbed to temptation. I'd probably still go for one of the ESP Edwards Les Pauls for that reason.

FOr a while there... what, about 2-3 years ago?... Epi's were pretty good guitars for the money. Everything goes in cycles I suppose.
