MOCKUPS YO!!!!!

i am really into these mockups i see here. alot of people have great ideas and with the technology advancements one can do these mockups of some absolute gorgeous instruments.
but my question is...... how does one do a mockup like this. is it software one can download? is it free? expensive? i don't understand how it's done and really would love to learn. i dont know how else to convey to a luthier what i want about a custom shape for a custom sixer that i want built. mockups seem the way to go.

if anyone has programs names or websites that can steer me in the right direction, what would be truly awesome. thanks guys

I use Adobe Illustrator for all of my mockups.

It lets me do stuff like this:
