Speaking of vintage!

Some of the older folk here, 'may' remember...

My friend's father has a old Ibanez guitar, the old kind meaning the original being-sued-for-copying-the-Les-Paul-model body. I want to say that I've seen these before the 1990's, we've been friends for that long.

His guitar could definitely use some work though. His input jack needs some sodering. He was only playing through like a single 8" practice amp from fender i think so it was very difficult to gauge the exact sound quality of those models.

They have weird looking pickups; the ones that look like humbuckers but look about half-pickup and half-screws?

The fretboards on this model was beautiful, it was a hardwood body. One thing I've noticed was that the fretboard was finished so there would be no oiling done.

I'll try to get some pics for you mates! The year ranging for these models was actually a "recall" from Ibanez but he decided to keep the guitar instead.

Anyone on here remember these older guitars? I have recently seen that Ibanez must have gotten rights or something because their catalog had some Les Paul shaped looking guitars.

That is a true keepsake. I would love to see the pictures of it. As for doing the work on it, I would be very careful, you wouldn't want to ruin a treasure like that.

Those sound like P90s. they're almost humbucker size but only have one row of bolts ?

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Yeah, one row. It's not in the center like the P90's but on the bottom "row" leaving a bare half, on the bridge pickup and vice versa for the neck pickup. They might need replaced. I'd love to help get that thing revitalized. I'd have to take a look for matching style pickups for it, so I'd prolly like to pick something that Gibson manufactures.

In my opinion, try to save the original pickups IF possible. If they work, keep 'em - vintage is vintage and those pups make the difference But if not, screw it.

If you want to find out the year that guitar was made, check out the Vintage Ibanez site. There's also the link to sixties Ibanez's, if it's that old...

By the way, Les Paul body shape wasn't the thing that made Gibson Les Paul's so special - it was way too common - it was the headstock. Originally, that was the thing Gibson was suing Ibanez over.

Ah, I didn't know that. Very nice link, thank you sir! I would definitely keep the pickups but until I get a chance to test them on a nicer amp, I'll suggest whether they need changed or not. Better if they didn't but who knows. Cheers!

No problem mate

Oh right. Disclaimer: I'm not a vintage wanker. Seriously.
