TemjinStrife is a jewel in the rough
Regardless of palm-muting problems, I've found the Variax to be an amazing tool in the studio.

I've never really had a problem with piezo "quack", even in the acoustic settings, and the XLR direct-in is really nice. It's heavy (I have a mahogany/ash 700) but the rhythm guitarist in my band uses it for EVERYTHING... alternate tunings, acoustic 12-string, rockabilly growl... it's really quite handy.

I could see the Variax being a good studio tool, but really Matt, how much recording are you doing these days? IT's kind of a jack of all trades, master of none thing, where a more inspiring guitar that did one thing well would make more sense than a generic one that did everything OK.

That's a good point (and the Variax is on the backburner now due to the Brunetti anyways) but it's still a useful tool for the acoustic/alternative tuning capabilities and I find that pretty inspiring. Might not be THE best tone I've ever heard but I've heard some damn convincing recordings from variax gutiars in the past so it's definitely possible.
