drawnQ is a jewel in the rough
i use the gibson b.b. king signature set of strings on my sig. edition esp stephen carpenter.
the lowest string gauge is a 52, it has such a fat tone. you have to adjust your picking technique to compensate for the increased size of the string.

D´addario XL 52-10 Stainless Steel strings, man... they´re really really bright and clear... if you don´t like the thickness, get those strings anyways... they are heavy as hell

+1. thats very true, and always gets ignored. i think just cause without doing so it even feels wrong, but still. HA, you should try playing a set of 9s - 60's. THATS a bitch to adjust to, cause it varies so much

Yeah, they die faster from that new sound, but oddly enough, if you need that sound, they're cheap as hell to replace. shit, 6 custom gauged sets for a 7 string for 42 bucks shipped to my door? i cant complain about that. I've never once broken an ernie ball high e, any gauge 9-13. EVER

i always found that big gauges dont have enough bite for me, i use .008 - .56, there is a definate twang with smaller strings.
I think it basically comes down to vibration, thin strings vibrate more than thicker ones, therefore you have to pick a little harder, but i think nick pretty much had it right on.

and while the nut issue may not have any effect on the muffled sound, i'm sure its not helping your playing with the string on top of the nut. and i'm no luither, but that might be playing havoc with the truss rod adjustment
