Low F# on a 25.5" scale 6-string?

my friend wants me to setup his USA Jackson Rhoads with the lowest string "as low as possible"....ideally he wants an F#. i think he's planning on using a .70 for it. is this likely to work well at all, and are we probably gonna have to drill out the tuner hole a bit?

i think G is the deepest you should go on a 6 string, thinking about intonation and inharmonicity...

a .70 might be a little thin, depending on how you like your strings... i´m getting a .70 string to tune to G... i would reccomend something larger, like a .75 or .80 bass string or so, but don´t take my word on it, ask around...

this guy uses a .80 for that tuning...

Bob (TDW) uses a .068 Elixir for low F on his 25.5" scale 7 with no complaints from him. So it could work. Though I doubt I would do it.

I would probably use a .090 bass string for F#@25.5
Everybody has different tastes...
I used to have a .085@27" and I liked that tension/feel a lot.

How do you cut a bass 80 short enough for the tunning posts without it unwinding? I'm getting a sixer and tunning it F#C#G#D#A#F (and sometimes FCGDAE).

You unwind the second winding and feed the inner core of the string thru the tuning hole :]

I liked .068 on a 27" for F#, meaning .070 on a 25.5 should be fine. 85 or 90 would be like using a 60 for your E string, doesnt add up to me. I'd maybe go as heavy as a .074.

.070 should be okay, depending on how you like your strings to feel. I used to occasionally tune my .056 down to low Eb an octave below the string next to it. It worked well enough on my 25.5" scale, though I guess something thicker would really work better. My only reason for mentioning that I did it with a .056 is to demonstrate that you shouldn't need to use crazy thick strings unless you just want to.
