Looking for a new Ibanez guitar

So lately I've had terrible GAS for a new Ibanez especially after seeing August Burns Red and Veil of Maya.

But the problem is I don't know what I want! I've previously owned a RG350DX and while it was a decent guitar for the price I hated the pickups and the fact I could only have 3 springs for the tremolo!

I'm not really sure what I want in terms of what I am going to play, but I guess I'm planning to play in standard tuning and maybe rock and some clean stuff and metal here and there.

I also want something with a Floyd Rose or whatever Ibanez calls them and something with "decent" pickups since it's my belief that most Ibanezs come with crappy PUPs anyways.

Also I got Sam Ash to order me an EGEN8 to try just cause I liked how it looked, but I'm not sure if I will get it. I'm looking for something as loud as that in terms of look though.

Price range is about up to $800 maybe even stretching to $900.

One of the Premium series models would fit all your requirements. From there, look for a used RG3xxx, I've seen them go for close to your budget. They're MIJ, have trems, and are factory equipped with DiMarzio pickups.

Thanks for the info, but I am trying to get a new guitar. lol

But the Premium's sound awesome! I will definitely have to check it out and if they are good enough I might just have to do a layaway deal to get it haha.

Definitely look at a premium dude, I've played 3 now and they have all been fantastic, the next guitar im buying is a blue rg920qm premium. They can definitely compete with the prestiges and for the price and the features its well worth it.

Please check out my band!

Can anyone tell me how they feel about the Dimarzio IBZ pickups and the V7 and V8s?

Right now I'm having trouble deciding on which guitar just based on pickups and I figured if I was going to change pickups I might as well get a cheap RG or S and change it, but I can assume the Premium's pups are nice right?

SO MANY CHOICES!!

unfortunately the v7/v8 and ibz pickups leave alot to be desired which is the one bad thing about all ibanezes. I forgot to mention all the premiums i have played have already had dimarzio crunchlabs and liquifires installed because they were for ibanez endorsees who I am good friends with with.

Oh dang lol

Also another thing killing me is the Edge III vs. the Edge pro vs. the Edge Zero

I think the RG I used to have had an Edge III and it seemed alright, but yeah.... I'm thinking at the price I'm wanting to go for a LTD might be a better choice -_-

The one trem I will never touch again is the Edge iii i despise that thing so much, my rg2610e had the edge pro and I loved it, it stayed in tune great, was easy to work with, and never gave me any problems and from my friend who now owns that same rg he says the edge zero ii on the premiums is just as good if not better than the pro.

just my personal experience with these as well

Ibanez puts great pickups in their basses, but their guitar pickups sound like ass.

I just ordered yet ANOTHER prestige and again, it's just night and day vs the premium. I mean, they are not even close. If it was legal for me to sell it here, I'd put it up. (yep, read the rules)

The body on the premium is nice. The Desert Red cannot be done justice in photos. The edge zero II is "ok" and I don't hate on ibz/dimarzio pups like some do.

But again, the fretwork is just not there imho.

I have one final question before I head out to Sam Ash this week...

Ibanez RG920QMZ (don't know what color I want) or EGEN8 or S770PB or LTD H-1001FR?

I'm definitely looking for a new guitar thats eye-catching, but yeah I assume the play-ability of them all are good enough and the tone is decent...

I've played the premiums 717ctsjz has played and i'd have to agree with him. To compare necks, the premium necks feel a little more baseball batty than the prestiges but they play just as fast and the fretwork is remarkable.

the v7/v8 set isnt too bad. not the best but a good starter that some people tend to grow on. i switched the v8 out for a crunch lab but that's just my preference.

not to familiar on trems so i'll keep my mouth shut

good luck to ya!

I had the 770PB. Funny you should mention it because I feel like the neck on the 920 is the SAME NECK What I didn't like about my PB was the sustain. I know the pups sucked, but not sure that was it. Beautiful guitar though. Of the two Ibby's the I think you'll like the 920 more, but this is a very personal choice. It's tough too because allot of in-store guitars are so crusty and need the TLC of a new master

I am in love with my pink RG1XXV. Absolutely killer guitar, easily as good or better than any of the Japanese/Prestige models I've played. And it doesn't hurt that I got it for less than $650 either (coupon codes and price matching FTW). Just for some perspective, my first Ibanez was a brand new RG7620 and my second was a USA Custom RG. I don't see any reason to even consider getting a Prestige over a Premium, personally. The neck might be a little fuller on the Premium, but I think it feels great.

A little update:

I went to the store and played the RG920 and the EGEN8 and I have chosen the EGEN8!

I really preferred the EGEN8 neck over the RG920 and that's what it really came down to. I might replace the pickups and the bridge some time in the future but they seemed good already. Now just to pay it off...

Do yourself a favor and buy an early 90's or late 80's RG550.

If there is anything on those Premiums that is on par or maybe even a tiny tad better than on some of the Prestiges, then it's their fretwork. I have yet to hear about a Premium with bad fretwork. Mine sure has perfect fretwork.
