Good value in very old guitar? Gibson question.
Hey SS
I'm looking for a new guitar for some old-time blues/rock playing. I've been looking at Gibsons for that sweet, fat tone. I've come across a very nice looking Les Paul goldtop on a danish forum. The positive thing is that I really, really dig the looks, and it's in excellent condition, but what makes me worried about buying is that it is VERY old (1958!) so I'm worried about wear and tear and the general condition; especially since it's priced at about the same as a brand new Les Paul Studio! (Round about 1400 euro/1200£). So what do? Get the old Gibson, which looks stunning but is OLD (though well taken care of) or get the brand new Studio where I know the condition is perfect? |

Send me a link, I'll take an inspection.
I'm quite tipping towards the relic already, but the condition it is in will have to say a lot, and the Studio series is a quite hefty guitar too. And if you even decide to change pickups on the relic (which is ....ing heresy, but oh well)... I'll take them.

As said, the condition is really good. It has been taken well care of. Can't link, it belongs to my friend who inherited it from his dad, but he doesn't play guitar himself, so he's selling it.
Anyways, I'm kinda thrown off by the fact that it comes with stock pickups. I'll most likely just replace them with EMGs anyways. Also, it says its a Les Paul Custom. Does this have any signifiance? And is 1200£ too much for a 1958 Les Paul Custom goldtop? |

It's way, way, WAY too little. I'd think you would be looking more towards ten to twenty grand for a genuine '58 Gold Top, even one that's a little beaten up. If he really wants £1200 for it, run away. Unless he just really doesn't know what it's worth.
Unless you mean £12,000, which is probably closer to being right. As for a '58 sunburst... they can go for hundreds of thousands. EDIT: Check out the approx. values at the bottom of this page: http://vintage-guitars.blogspot.co.u...l-goldtop.html Quote:
Run. It's almost certainly a fake. Also, if you do get it and put EMGs in it, and it turns out to be real... I'm assembling an angry mob and coming to Denmark to find you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Check out my YouTubings by making clicks upon this most generously provided link: http://www.youtube.com/user/ConnorFGuitar?feature=mhee You can thank me later. But, I've made up my mind, I'm going with the Studio (even though I see some of you think the '58 is a good value). Reason is because my local place is offering me to put in some EMGs really cheap. |

Wow what an awesome thread.
I don't get your reasoning though, OP. If you're so sure that the 58 Gold Top is real, why don't you buy it and resell it for a huge profit? Or at least tell your friend that it's worth a lot more than he thinks. And why the hell do you want EMGs for "old-time blues/rock playing"? |

Had a feeling you were trolling, considering you said it was on a danish forum at first, then, said it was your friends' dad's. Good try though, well played.

Wtf man. I was all ready to go on a rant about how you have absolutely no ....ing idea of how collectible old Gibsons are and how everyone and their mothers were going to be beat the shit out of you for putting EMG's in it
.This might truly be the most unanticipated April Fools joke I've ever heard of. Well played, my friend
