NFGD (New Free Guitar Day!)

Hello SSO. First thread, please be gentle!

I had a friend gift me a 1991ish Jackson Performer Rhoads with a bolt-on. I went over to his house to buy a 4x12 cab off of him and he insisted I take it with me as well, saying it was "in his way." It even came with the oem case. What a guy.

Here she is! Pardon the phone quality picture:

It plays amazingly well considering he hasn't touched it at all for a couple years. The setup even held. I was jammin on it last night after some adjustments.

The trem is basically done (the arm socket is stripped), so for now I'm just going to install a tremelno and probably swap out the pickups. I'm considering swapping the floyd down the road, but I don't really like floyds so I may just leave it blocked.

Does anybody have any recommendations for pups for these things? I have read somewhere that these early-mid 90s Jacksons have poplar bodies. I was thinking a JB (have one in another axe and I love it) but was also looking for suggestions. Thanks for reading! Love this place.

That was my initial thought until I played it. Its super comfortable when you're standing up. Totally different vibe from a gibson style v.

It looks a little funny on me but I think if I headbang hard enough people will stop laughing. I can't wait to bring it to rehearsal.

the early and mid 90's jacksons are great guitars--even the performer series.
i used to have a jackson kelly pro series from that era and it was a fantastic player--same color as yours.

My friend: I just had an argument with a girl I know. She was saying how it's unfair that if a guy ....s a different girl every week, he's a legend, but if a girl ....s just two guys in a year, she's a slut. So in response I told her that if a key opens lots of locks, then it's a master key. But if a lock is opened by lots of keys, then it's a shitty lock.

Rhoads is the most comfy shape ever, too bade they are so extremely pointy and get damaged easy.
They looks very metal though.

Yeah he even said "its got a stupid blue DiMarzio cliplok on it. You want me to take it off?" Dude is a super nice guy. I've played in a band with him before and I know him well, so I'm pretty sure it isn't hot or anything.

To be honest, I was going to swap the pickups, but the more I play the thing the more I like the tone as it is. Of course that may change. I'll see how the tremel-no I ordered changes things.

Glad to be here, guys! Kickass community.

I'm pretty sure it went into the Marines with him. I haven't verified the exact year but its definitely early-mid 90s. I promised him if I ever sold it I'd forward the proceeds, but just on sentimental value I don't plan to, even if I rarely play it. In 10 years it'll be a relic!

I believe the Performer Series were introduced in 1995, + or - a year. My first guitar was a Performer PS-4 Dinky that I never should have got rid of. It had one of the thinnest necks I have ever played.

those old jackson pickups are indeed pretty nice for most usages (they're duncan designed IIRC).
if you like really high gain stuff, they might not quite be able to cut it. that was my experience with my jackson kelly of that era.

Are they really duncan designed? Thats awesome.

My normal tone is pretty crunchy but its definitely not death metal levels of dirt, so these may just stick around. We'll have to see how they hold up in a band setting.

Wow! That's a pretty killer guitar for free! You're a luck dude, you should prob buy a lottery ticket!

I had a Jackson RR assembled from parts, I had duncan JB/Jazz in it and it sounded pretty damn good, but of course EMGs will always be a good choice. Good luck in whatever you choose!

Great score!

Hmmm, IIRC performer was a bit after 1991. I got a Jackson Professional in '92, pretty sure that the lower end guitars were Charvel or (eek) Charvette branded.

Those old import Jacksons are pretty awesome. I can't remember ever having had my one set up and it was my #1 for about 14 years! Rock solid, much more so then the USA Jacksons that I used when I could afford them.

GADZOOKS AND ODDS BODKINS!!!!!
