NGD: Some Assembly Required

So, a couple days before Halloween I was cruising though eBay and found a damaged but repaired Epiphone LP Standard on eBay for an okay price. Considering the look of the look of the repair and the guy's decent feedback, I shot him an offer, more expecting it to get rejected than anything. Well, it got accepted and the waiting game began. Well, once it arrived I opened the box to find this.

The original crack had popped back open. Looking over the more or less undamaged box, it was one of two things that caused the damage: Poor packaging (just wrapped with some nuts at the bottom), or the first repair wasn't done well (just a bit of glue at the bottom of the joint). So, first thing I did was message the seller about it. He offered a full refund and shipping, but I ended up getting a partial refund and getting it repaired. Well, wood glue, clamps, and 16 hours later I had this.

Feels very sturdy, holds tune, and sounds great. I still need to fill the gap in the back and clean it up, but I'm going to wait about a week before I do that or put heavier strings on. Overall, with the look, feel, and price of it, I'm pretty happy.

Planned changes are filling and sanding off the neck, some Dragonfire Pickups, and a set of 10-52s down to D.

personally I would not be ok with that at all.

If the guy has done it right now, which I guess he has,

It should be fine forever.

It's still a good functioning guitar it just needed some work.

Maybe because I am a percussionist mainly, but when something like that happens, imo it wont be quite the same ever again. Like, I wouldn't try to glue or tape some sticks together and try to reuse them.

I heard of people deliberately breaking Epiphone or Gibson headstocks purely to glue them back on because they're stronger that way.

Congrats! I'm actually working on one myself right now, head didn't break but had a crack. I've gotten a few free guitars this way and I love it, it allows me to work on them and get better with that, and when I'm done I have a great new guitar. Have fun with this man

Thanks. Yeah, I bought it as a a broken guitar that had been repaired, so a big discount off of even that price to just do another repair wasn't a big deal for me. It's pretty solid now.

This was my first real repair like this, but after looking up a ton of guides it seemed simple enough.

good stuff man and happy ngd! the other guitarist in my band had his epiphone les paul neck snap on him and its been stronger ever since it got repaired I wonder if this happens alot? haha

hey it looks pretty sharp now! Hopefully that holds, but yeah, I've heard of people gluing the headstocks back on to make it more stable as well! So hopefully that'll do the same with yours!

I read in a magazine that necks of SG's break easily, especially the older ones (for obvious reasons). Have never heard of LP's having weak necks though.

Trust me, working in a guitar store it happens a lot! Les pails have a weak point right where the head meets the neck, I think has something to do with the head stock angle

Yep,.,so little wood there its hard to believe it can hold the string tension.

Beyond that, the grain is really short at that spot = easy breakage. Epiphones seem to break a bit less due to the scarf jointed headstock.
