I finally get another NGD
Sooooooooo, my second home built guitar is finally done!
Specs first, just because I dont want to say "Pics first who cares about the rest amirite" # of strings: 6 strings scale: 27.5" neck joint : long tenon set neck top wood: flamed/birdseyed Sinker redwood body wood: mahogany (heaviest mahogany ever) neck wood: 7 piece flamed maple/mahogany fingerboard: macassar ebony with 16" radius frets: 24 frets, 6100 evo fretwire Tuners: Hipshot griplocks Bridge: Hipshot .125 with Graphtech GHOST saddles pickups: crunchlab/liquifire combo in black/creme Graphtech acoustiphonic preamp. Controls: 1 magnetic volume with push pull for dual coiltaps, 3 way magnetic switch, 1 piezo volume, piezo/mag switch. Nut: Graphtech Tusq XL Control cavity cover: Cocobolo (I might make a new one, bot sure) Finish: French polish with a rather unknown varnish/laquer/whatever the hell it may be Alrighty, on with the pics! ![]() Took a bunch of similar ones with different lightning to show how the color/figure changes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Macassar ebony fingerboard is simply exquisite! But it doesnt show well on the pics, so Here's an old pic of the fingerboard from when I was doing the fretwork... still rounded the edges after this pic. ![]() Back to present pics! ![]() and finally: ![]() Holy cow, I need to sleep... and a haircut... and a shave... Ok, with the porn now administered, I shall have a speech. For those who dont go often into the luthiery section, here's the build: Second build... I built this guitar in my freetime, and the build took me 3 months. Then about 6 weeks for the finish to be ready (I think the 6 week wait was worth it.) Built it with a router and a drill press as far as power tools go. Cut EVERYTHING by hand with a small coping saw. I even cut the 2 thin (2.5mm thick) maple stripes in the neck by hand, which took me 2 days of flat out sawing. It's even finished the old fashioned way with a ragdoll and not a compressor and gun. Hell, this guitar even made me bleed my own blood! FiRST IMPRESSIONS: Well, this pics were taken as soon as I finished putting all the pieces together, Afterwards I still filed the nut to get the action where I want it. Now that I've had a bit of time to play it (while the neck gets used to the new tension) my first impression was that it's a VERY LOUD guitar. Notes ring out HARD and last pretty damn long (not as long as my first build, but that's a freak guitar). Tonewise, the guitar is both thick and clear sounding, even under high gain, I feel like I need more gain, because it's that clear. Second impression, was that the crunchlab is a ridiculosly good pickup... holy cow! I just want to solo all night long on the bridge position. The liquifire on the other hand didnt impress me. I mean, it's good, but I'm not blown away... might end up trying an air norrton I have lying around. Lastly, The sinker redwood top... Pics just can't do it justice. Hell, I feel like I didnt do it justice. It's absolutely ridiculous to behold in person. The figure seems to come out a good inch or 2 out of the guitar, and it has shades of green and purple, and metal that don't show in the pics. Tonewise, it just opens up the sound of the guitar (it's unbelievably light), makes it very lively, which is a great compliment for the extra dense mahogany. Ugh, wall of text has extended quite a bit already, so I'll just leave it at that, but feel free to ask anything about it or the build. PS. I'll be NGDing my other build in about a week hopefully! Is this... guitar?

Man those slippers are immense
![]() On a serious note, that looks like a real sweet guitar. Cant wait to hear some clips. And I dig that heel! If my upcoming build comes out half as good as that or your previous axe, I'll be chuffed. |

Well, my shoesize is 32, or what americans would cal 14 I believe, which is pretty damn big, particularly if you are 6' 2". Likewise I has big hands (particularly palms for some reason) which is why I'm enjoying the fudge out of the 27.5" scale. It's so damned comfortable for me that I wonder why I ever settled for 25.5"Thanks a bunch! Haha, thanks man, means a lot. Mahogany body with a mahogany/maple neck must sound familiar to you Likewise Thanks man. Waiting for the finish to cure was driving me nuts.

I was unsure of how the fingerboard would look with the top when I applied the finish, but I think it's a match made in heaven... Or hell maybe. Tell me about it, I'm barely getting any sleep between school, and trying to finish these 2 axes by the next weekend. Don't know If 'ill be able to pull it off. Is this... guitar?

Amazing guitar man, I'm incredibly jealous that you are gonna be finishing your 3rd build before I even finish my first.
I too have bear paws for hands so my next build will be a longer scale. Keep building man, you have a gift!

First things first, now that I've had small bits of time to play it some more, I'm liking the liquifire a lot better than initially. I'll save the air norton for something else.
Nah man, building these for fun. Thanks a bunch man. btw, this one also has a bookmatched headstock ![]() Come play! Quote:

Thanks, I know the shape isnt for everyone, but it has the 2 most important things for me in a guitar (besides the sound) it balances PERFECTLY (never played a properly balancing baritone), and it's very comfortable. Also, it has great upper fret access. Is this... guitar?
