Confusion
Alright heres my dilema, I wanna sell my UV Reason 1. I dont have the need for 7. No disresepect towards the 7 stringer's you guys do a great job but its not me. 2. No one else has a 7 string, so its not like I can jam with guy's and make or cover some 7 string material.
well as for the dilema im stuck between some guitar's, I currently want a Alexi Laiho V which is pretty cool I played it at a store its nice, but I recently came across a Bernie rico jr guitar for a good price not to far from the laiho, now the difference between theese two item's are 1. Origin, The alexi is made over sea's where as the Bernie rico is made in the USA HAND CRAFTED. 2. Playability, The laiho feel's great plays awsome smooth neck and ebony and everything sounds great, The playability on rico's are fantastic nothing like a handmade neck. 3. Looks, now heres a big factor the alexi looks cool I personally love white guitar's and the bernie rico I came across is natural wood a quilt like mahogany which beings me to my next point 4. Wood's Alexi is alder the bernie rico is mahogany (a but undesivece about both as im use to basswood) 5. Tone, as i stated before the Alexi is alder and ebony and the rico is mahagony or its really like a AAA mahogany and it was ebonty as well, the pickups are Seymour duncans cant remember the model's at the top of my head and the alexi only comes with ONE EMG HZ..... Final summation, they both look and play nice and im still undecided |

Man, this one's easy. The Bernie Rico all the way, for me.
That being said, you can still play a 7 with 6-string players. You just have more range. If they play a standard A chord, you can play a low A (if you drop the B to A). Whatever. Lots of stuff like that. I've played my 7 with many 6-stringers, and I tune my 7 down to F! If many strings aren;t for you, why stop there? WHy not play a 5, or 4 string guitar? Do a Max Cavalera! ![]() Not picking on you, I just never understood that argument. To me, more is better. ![]() ![]() |

It's not like you absolutely MUST cram that low B everywhere. The seven string has everything you need to jam with six string players and then some. But if the UV doesn't feel right for you and you really want to play a sixer, then go ahead. It's about doing what makes you happy.
About those guitars: I've never played a Bernie Rico jr so I can't comment on that other than if it looks like a medieval instrument of inhuman torture, I wouldn't even consider it. I'm sure it's a quality guitar. The ESP's I've played have been very good guitars. But I would never buy the Alexi model. It's very overpriced. I suggest you find an SV standard. Same body shape, has a neck pickup and the same woods and construction. And it doesn't have pug fugly scythe inlays. |

Regardless, ESP's are very well made, on no disrespect for you guys but american made guitars havn't been getting the best of praise in the last few years, so you can see where I'm going here. . .
I say go for the Laiho, if you have the money too spend. If your still undecided, I'll make your decision harder by giving you this link. . . www.ikebe-gakki.com If you can navigate your way to guitars, and then 'Jackson Stars' you'll see what Alexi's Jackson signature would have been, It's pretty much the ESP, black Rhoads body with EMG HZ pick-up and a EMG afterburner installed. And it's available in Japan for plenty less money than the two guitars we're discussing here. Hope this helps! |

The one thing that has me worried about 7 strings, is really the neck size.. I dont really listen to TOO much 7 string music, and I really doubt I will be writing with it too much either, because I am not really a fan of that super low chunk, least not all the time.. so to me, the 7th string really isnt needed, I could get by witha 6 string (like right now)
That being said, when I get my first 7 hopefully soon, Its all going to come down to if I feel comfortable with the neck, because of course I want a 7th string, and I can use it to really enhance my songs and play other stuff I cant with normal 6 strings, but im not going to sacrifice comfortability for that, so if the neck doesnt fit, I guess I gotta let go of the dream of 7 strings =[[ But thats my opinion on it, and I'll hopefully find out in afew weeks heh I heard really great things about the Alexi, but if you can get a handmade Rico, You can't go wrong with that.. But I think it will all come down to how you feel about the looks and the sound options you get out of it. Can you live with one pickup? I mean it doesnt have to be the HZ, you can switch that to like a x2n or JB or whatever you like, but would you be able to live with one pickup?? And then for the Rico, do you really like that look over the Alexi? Alexi's are pretty hot, I just dont really like the white pinstrip or black so I personally would probably go for the Rico, and I would need my Jazz neck pickup =] |

a seven is not a six with an extra string (well it is... but yeah). I still prefer 6 stringers for certain things. Battery by Metallica for example
its just so much easier to play on the E without the B in the way...Both are good though ![]() My two cents ![]()

They sound like completely different beasts, I'd say try some similar axes out and decide what woods, etc. you like the best then make your decision based on that.
I've been wanting an Alexi and hate the Bernie shapes so you can know what I would go for but I'm not saying you should. |

Not a fan of the Laiho V it doesn't look right too me. As a man who just recently blew all his cash on a new 6 I can tell ya that I understand your decision about 7's not being your thing. While I would never sell my UV as I love chugging away on that B string, it can be difficult sometimes playing 6 string stuff with it in the way. I would go for the Bernie Rico jr personally as I've played a few and can only say nice things about them. You could also try and find an older RR v as those are what the Laiho V is trying to be, I personally think they are much nicer (almost bought one before I bought my jem).

It's really not much of a leap, it feels different to a 6 string for sure, but it's not like suddenly just playing an E chord becomes a challenge to be re-learnt. The only problem I had at first with a 7 was getting used to not confusing the E string for the A string and stuff, since on a 6 you're used to the E being 'on top'. A couple of hours later and it was cool though. If you're getting any kind of slim neck like an Ibanez, then I wouldn't even sweat. Lefty Musketeer ![]() |
