"Hugging" the neck on a 6-string - am I doing it wrong?

I am quite new to the 7 - it's been 2 months now, but already I am feeling more comfortable with 7's than 6's. Turns out that I actually have long fingers(something that I never suspected) and the wide neck of the 7 just gives me room to put my thumb on all the right places.

Now, I still want to get a nice 6-string for some drop-B/drop-D tunings, as I enjoy to write my music in those. However, every 6 I have touched for the past month just felt unnatural. There is no room for my hand and I end up "hugging" the whole neck which results in my fingers getting cramped and my playing slugging badly. I've tried thin necks, wide C necks, D necks... doesn't work.

I am no great player by any means, so I was wondering - am I doing it wrong? Although I've tried lots of stances, my thumb can never find a good steady-point.
OR - maybe there is a guitar out there that will work for me. I know I haven't tried it all - any model/neck shape suggestions?

All I know is that 3 months ago I thought that a "thin neck" is extremely cool. Now that I feel more comfortable with a 27" 7-string neck, I can't say I think the same.

If all else fails - I'll just do drop-D on a 7 string. That'd give me some interesting results, aswell, I imagine.

The first month with my seven was like that you say, (`cause I always was on that poor guitar) but now, I play everyday my seven, my 2 six, and my acoustic, so, with all that changes, my mind just memorize all the necks.
Sometimes I have basses to fix with me and I play too, I think this will work.
Play six and sevens (and 8, bass, violins, everithing) in every ocasion you can, so your hand will never get use to one neck/guitar.

sory my English, not my day today.

I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, Sir, because I'm not myself you see.
You're nothing but a pack of cards.

What sixes are you playing? I have giant hands and I find both equally comfortable. My futura has the same neck profile as an ibanez wizard 2 neck and I have no problem switching between that, to my strat copy with a beefy C strat neck, and my 7 douglas with a very thin U profile (almost, if not the same size as my old ibanez RG7620 neck.. badass stuff, being I only paid 190 dollars for the douglas!).. though at first I'd have a problem with my hand cramping up. Just play all of them evenly as mentioned and you should be fine
