NFL Buffoons

Interesting article here. They were talking about it on the radio this morning.

FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - NFL buffoons leaving terrible legacy

Something I've been saying for years - except I would get crucified for publicly stating it. Interesting read.

I like how the writer makes the difference between it being a race issue and a culture issue. Cool article.

Hip-hop is not the issue. Giving multi-million dollar paychecks to 21-year-olds is the problem, as well as the increasingly high-dollar nature of sports in general. The 'problem kids' at issue have been coddled and told how wonderful and talented they are since they were 10 or 11 years old by various coaches and scouts. No surprise that they develop attitude problems.

The real secret behind both the Colts and Patriots is not that they hire white guys, but that they are built around solid cores of older players and/or less-heralded guys who didn't get everything handed to them as child athletes. Those guys run the locker rooms and knock some sense into any potential knuckleheads among the younger guys.

BTW, the NFL has always had its share of crazy bastards and party animals--it's just that we live in a shitty zero-tolerance society now, and ESPN is there to document every stupid thing that happens. Read up sometime on the great Raiders teams of the '70s. That was basically a traveling circus that would have competed with the big rock tours of the same era. Here in D.C., Sonny Jurgenson and Billy Kilmer (the Redskins QBs of the late '60s-early '70s) were notorious for carousing around town in a drunken state.

I love how he called Chad Johnson the "Flavor Flav of the gridiron."
