PM halsinden...

It sort of lies in 'clearing your throat' but it is more complex than that.

my apologies, morbidtravis, but we've sort of done over this in another thread. at the moment i don't have a link to that at hand, and i'm not sure what key words you'd need to search on here for it.

maybe someone on here might know, i just can't quite remember.

that's possibly no help whatsoever, but...

sorry, it's just that going over everything again may be a little tricky. plus i'm by no means the reigning authority on it at all, i just seem to speak a fair about singing.

i can do mids and highs, i cannot do lows. one thing is do NOIT use yourvocals. that will only hurt you and yur sound. i do back up screaming so i dont do alot but the short time i do it i use my diaphram. kinda bow your chest out and do not let all your air out or yu will be fighting for it. also, to control your volume, use your stomach. like yur trying to take a massive 40 pound ..... and like stich said "clear your throte" good luck! i hope i helped a little!

I Åkerfeldt's vocals. I'm kind of curious as to how you do it as well.

Whether it's laughable or irrational, this is the path that ALL great men walk!
If there's a wall in our way, we'll destroy it!
If there's no road, we'll pave it with our own hands!
The magma in our hearts is blazing like flames!
Who the hell do you think we are?

I can do all manner of death metal vocals (From Akerfeldt to Stanne, although admittedly not Karl Saunders), at least in sound, but I don't have the stamina of guys who do it professionally. How do I do it? I dunno. One day I just... could.

Karl Sanders you mean? He's not really the vocalist for Nile. It's Dallas who does 95% of the vocals for the band.

Technique is part of it, but it comes down to practice, practice, practice.

I'm a great singer, but man, I used to not be able to sing DM vocals at all. My voice is too clean and pure. Or so I thought.

I kept at it, though, and now I have a vocal sound, when I sing that way, very similar to Mikael Akerfedlt (even though I sorta wish I sounded like Randy Blythe. But, my main singer does that, so we blend well together).

It takes time to get your vocal cords used to the sounds DM requires. Almost, metaphorically, like building up callouses for playing guitar.

I don't have any clips. Notice, Nick, after all these years, I don't have any GUITAR clips up, either? And I'm a pretty damn good guitarist. ...., I should be. I studied classical guitar at the University level.

But! My .... for recording don't work right. Yet. Gotta reformat, but I'm lazy.

Come to Toledo and hear me. I'm a damn good singer, and I could care less about singing in front of folks, but my singing ability isn't really the point for this thread. It's about tips for DM vox. I don't have to prove anything.

Absolutely and over time your voice will start changing but usually for the better - a more distinct voice since at the beginning you usually try to imitate someone and once you are successful eventually you get a sound of your own.

To answer the other poster regarding the low growls, the trick is in the shape of your mouth. Aim for the kind of shape your mouth would do when saying something like "Oooooh". Very small opening of the mouth, and use a lot of air. Make sure you really inhale before doing this
