What's in your studio?

Mine is pretty simple for now. Zoom GFX-5, ->ART Tube MP ,-> audigy 2 soundcad,-> cakewalk guitar tracks pro 2 and 3..

I also have sonic foundry, Acid pro, Nuendo, and fruity loops. some were aquired *ahem* illegitametly. But I mostly use GTP2/3 which i paid for. The other one's i use to get my bearing on in the recording world..

Thanks for the compliment. It serves me well. Any sound I want, it's pretty fantastic.

You edited your list. Why'd you get rid of the TC g-major, and why does your equipment "come-and-go" ??

I sold the TC because it didn't work well in the loop of my Trademark 120. Now I'm selling the Trademark 120 to get a Johnson Millennium, lol. I used to have the G-Force and I wish I'd never sold it. It was a great studio tool.

I buy/sell a lot of stuff just to experiment really. I've been through endless guitars and I finally have one that I'm totally in love with (the RGT-3120)....and eventually I'll be there with an amp too, I hope.

I went through that a few years ago. I had a huge rig when I was experimenting, and spent a lot of money at the time. at one point, I had 2 Mesa power amps (a 2:90 and a 50/50) in a big-ol refrigerator sized rack system with a Rocktron Chameleon and a Rocktron Piranha, a BBE, AKG wireless unit, rack tuner, etc.

Financial woes of a few years later and I sold all the non-essentials, keeping only the units I really used and had stored info in (the chameleon and the G-force). I built a simpler rig about a year and a half ago around those two units, and I honestly could not be happier with the sound. That Chameleon is underrated. I've had it for 7 years now, and I'm totally happy with the sounds I get.

How's the G-Force compared to the GNX?

I'm happy with my rig, but for recording the 2101 is impossible to get to tape. How's the metal tone on the G-Major?

Amp: 6505+ / Recto 4x12s

The G-Force and G-Major only do effects...they're not preamps. As far as effects quality though, they stomp anything digitech.

Josh, they stomp everything not labeled "Eventide"

The G-Force is the best effects unit I've ever played or heard. The control on it is absolutely insane and I love what I can do with the unit. The only thing I don't like about the G-Force that lexicon got right with their MPX-G2 is that there's no way to run some G-Force effects before the preamp and still have effects from the G-Force after the preamp (i.e. throw the preamp into an effects loop). It'd be so damn good to have the G-Force wah and pitch shifter running before my gain stage.

You can always plug the guitar into the G-force and then run into your preamp, but then there's no way to loop back to the G-Force for post-distortion effects.

As for preamps, if you're looking for a good preamp, these are my personal favorites:

Mesa/Boogie TriAxis (pricey but solid)

Rocktron Chameleon (the original or online model, not the POS Cham2000)

Rocktron VoodooValve (basically the Chameleon with a 12ax7 tube)

Rocktron Piranha (rackmount copy of the dual rectifier, run this with a BBE
for sharp Pantera-esque gain)

I've heard Mesa/Boogie has a new studio preamp that kills too so you might want to check that out as well. All these preamps kill and will get you just about any sound you wish.

Oh yeah, Digitech sucks. Just thought I'd throw that in there

my eventide

I enjoy my eventide 7000 it makes my whole mix...sometimes after i've recorded i use it to re amp or re mix certain reverbs into the mix it works well..A good example of what not to do with it...listen to the new Morbid Angel Heretic....when trey solos thats all he uses the mix drops considerably due to this and his choice of set up is so complex you barley hear what he is playing...i do believe it is an overrated toy...because is has a lot of useless programs to forwarn you all......some are cool but most suck!!!!

Pro Tool HD
Mac g5 (1 trigabyte)
waves p bundle
yamaha NS-10.genelec 1030 a monitors
Damagecontrol engineering preamps
Daking Eq's/pre amps
Forcusrite station
console 24 board fully loaded.
eventide Orville
eventide Dsp 700s
Every CROWN Mic Made (heheh!!)c310 399,312 etc..
Rode tube NT4 mic
various shure work horses sm's 57 etc..
HHB 830 Cd burnner
HHB Fat man compressor
Digitech Helicon (for Vocals)
Carvin Pa's speakers,mixers,mikes,cables,etc....I like Carvin stuff
an empty wallet because I am broke after buying all this crap heheheeh!!!!

I just got one and it's great!. I'm having trouble editing patches with my computer through a midi hookup. Allthough I've got about 7 great newly made patches already. I think the chorus sucks though-Imay look for an external one. It's hard to get a lush sound without it getting to warbley...

Pfft, I defy anyone to get a nastier distortion than the 2101. Granted it may suck for direct recording, but imho the distortion tones on it are the best around.

Mesa sounds great, sure...but you have to turn it up to eviction levels or it sounds like ass. That's why I don't have mine anymore...because in an appartment it was rather impractical.

I've played a bunch. And the reason that I prefer the 2101 is: What Josh said. Yeah, recto's sound fantastic, but not at a level that I can use in my apartment.

I love the 2101, and it's magical volume knob.
